Grace Elliott nailed down 19 points today but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet Raptors outlasted the Ramapo College women's basketball team, 49-44 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up. Rutgers Camden jumps ahead to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in conference play while the Roadrunners fall to 4-12 overall and 2-7 in the NJAC.
Elliott led all Roadrunners shooting 8-15 from the field for 19 points, while collecting a team high nine rebounds.
Alyson Oostdyk led the team with five assists and
Bridgette Buckalew grabbed three steals as the team shot a combined 16-52 (31%) in the loss. For Rutgers Camden, Kamari Talley shot 7-18 to lead the way in points with 18 as the team hit 17-53 (32%) from the floor. Cara Racobaldo grabbed five steals and five assists as Talley pulled down a team high 14 rebounds.
Elliott scored the first basket of the game for Ramapo but Rutgers Camden responded with an 11-1 run to take an 11-3 advantage with 2:23 to play in the first quarter. Michelle Obasi sparked the run that was capped off with a front end of a two shot foul from Carolina Santiago. Ramapo would get a basket to fall from Elliott with 1:38 to play but the Scarlet Raptors closed out the quarter on top, 13-5. In the second quarter, The Scarlet Raptors would hold a 19-10 lead with 6:17 on the clock but two free throws from
Bintou Berete would spark a 6-0 run to put Ramapo within three points, 16-19 heading into the intermission. Kelli Lane scored the final basket of the half for Ramapo. Elliott led the Roadrunners in the half with eight points as Ramapo went 5-25 (20%) in the first 20 minutes of play. Rutgers Camden was led by Talley with ten points. The team hit 8-23 (35%) in the half.
Rutgers Camden pushed in the third quarter to gain a double-digit lead at 4:34 when Talley grabbed an additional two points and Ramapo was able to come within seven, 25-32, at the end of the quarter with a basket from Berete. Elliott scored the first two points of the last quarter to put Ramapo within five points, 27-32, and with 5:23 on the clock,
Shelby Ringer drained a three-point goal to put Ramapo within three points, 34-37. The two teams traded baskets until 1:55 when Ramapo closed the gap to just two points with an and-one play from Elliott, but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet Raptors worked back to a six point advantage with 41 seconds to play, and a five point lead at the final buzzer with a layup from Ariel Robinson to earn the 49-44 victory. Ramapo hit 11-27 (41%) in the second half with Elliott leading the way with ten points and Talley led all Scarlet Raptors with eight points as the team went 9-30 (30%).
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, January 20th when they host William Paterson at 5:30pm at the Bradley Center.
