Newark, NJ: Jordan McDaniel led the Rutgers-Newark University men's basketball team to a 76-75 overtime victory over Ramapo College tonight at the Golden Dome. McDaniel led both teams with 32 points including five three-pointers as the Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-4 overall, 6-2 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC.
Thomas Bonacum grabbed an offensive rebound with seven seconds remaining in regulation and scored the game-tying basket for the Roadrunners 66-66 with five seconds left. The Scarlet Raiders were able to get a three-point shot off before the buzzer but it did not fall, forcing overtime.The Roadrunners scored first in OT as
Frank Nock nailed a three-pointer to go ahead 69-66 with under 4:30 on the clock. McDaniel and Tyler Ofray would sink back-to-back free throws for Rutgers-Newark for a 70-69 lead with 3:38 on the clock. Ramao took a three-point lead once again when Nock and
Cory Soanes tallied back-to-back scores of their own with 2:27 left in the game. The Scarlet Raiders went on a mini 4-0 run for a one-point lead before Nock put Ramapo up 75-74 with 48 seconds on the clock. Following a Rutgers-Newark time out, Morgan Dixon grabbed an offensive rebound while Ofray put the Scarlet Raiders in the lead for good 76-75 with a layup with 19 seconds on the clock. Ramapo then called timeout to set up a last second shot but the Scarlet Raiders were able to block the Roadrunner shot to preserve the one-point overtime NJAC victory.
Rutgers-Newark held a seven-point lead at halftime but it was quickly erased with a 22-6 run the Roadrunners made in the first 12:30 of the second half. Ramapo took a 56-47 lead with 7:27 left in the half when
Josh Ford put in a layup off a steal. That was Ramapo's largest lead of the game before the Scarlet Raiders when on a run of their own. Rutgers-Newark went on a 13-2 run to take a 60-58 lead with under four minutes to play in the second half capped off by a three from John Snow.
Christopher Moseley and Bonacum sank back-to-back shots for Ramapo for a one-point lead with 2:06 on the clock before Ofray sank a pair of free throws with 1:42 left to play to tie the game at 62. Ofray nailed a three-pointer for a 65-62 lead with 42 seconds left on the clock before Moseley cut the lead to one 64-65 with a layup of his own with 26 seconds on the clock. Ofray sank one of two free throws before Bonacum was able to tie the game for Ramapo to send the game in to overtime.
Bonacum led the team with 22 points, four assists and one block while Nock added 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Haye came off the bench for Ramapo and tallied 13 points, including 2-2 from the three-point line. The team shot 44% (31-70) from the field in the game while the Ramapo defense forced 24 Scarlet Raider turnovers, which led to 27 points for the Roadrunners. Ramapo also tallied 44 points in the paint to the Scarlet Raiders 30.
McDaniel fished the game 11-19 from the field with 32 points, six rebounds and two steals while Snow added 17 points and three assists. Ofray added 12 points and three assists of his own while David Azoroh led the team with ten rebounds. The team shot 44% (25-56) from the field in the game, 38% (8-21) from the three-point line and 85% (18-21) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, January 16th when they travel to NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University at 3pm.
