#2 COUGARS GET PAST RAMAPO

Union, NJ:  The #3 seeded Ramapo College baseball team dropped a tough, 5-4 decision tonight to the #2 seeded Cougars of Kean University in the second round of the 2015 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.  With the loss the Roadrunners fall to 26-13 overall and face elimination as they take on the #1 seeded Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers Camden tomorrow at 10am.  Kean improves to 30-10.

The Cougars got on the board first in the top of the 1st inning before a run from Rafael Dela Cruz in the bottom of the 2nd tied the game at 1-1.  Dela Cruz doubled with two outs and later came home on a Ryan Rinsky double to right center field.  Ramapo took the lead in the 5th with an unearned run from Brandon Berger as he came home on a fielding error, before a run from Kean's Ryan Kelley in the top of the 6th would tie the game again, 2-2.

Each team would score a run in the 7th inning but it was the top of the 9th where the Cougars would surpass Ramapo and stay on top for the tournament win.  Kelley drove in Chris Amato with a sac fly to right field and no outs, before a ground out from Salvatore Taormina drove in Matt Meleo to put the Cougars ahead 5-3.

The Roadrunners proved to be dangerous in the bottom of the inning getting in Rob DeAngelis off a sac fly from Chris Werr to come within one, and with bases loaded threatened the Cougars, but Amato took the mound and struck out Ramapo's final batter to take the one run, 5-4 win.

Taormina and Matt Krupa each went 2-5 in the win.  Taormina drove in three runs while five different Cougars scored in the game.  Emilio Calderon started the game for Kean and pitched six innings.  He struck out two and walked three, while Vinny Zanfordino gets the win in 2.2 innings of work.  He struck out one and walked one, letting up just two hits.

Tom Portesy pitched eight innings for the Roadrunners as he struck out five and walked four.  He let up ten hits and five runs in just his first loss of the season. He falls to 8-1 on the year. DeAngelis scored two runs for Ramapo and Werr drove in two, as Dela Cruz went 1-3 with one run scored.
