Mahwah, NJ: The #2 seed Ramapo College softball team defeated #5 seed Kean University today in the opening round of the 2015 NJAC Softball Tournament 8-2. The Roadrunners improve to 25-11-1 overall while the Cougars fall to 23-10-1.
Ramapo advances to play #3 William Paterson University on Friday, May 1st at host Rowan University at 3:30pm.
Ramapo got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Melanie Walling drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before she was lifted for pinch runner
Emily Helmer. Helmer moved up on a fly out to right field before she came home on an infield throwing error for a 1-0 Ramapo lead. The bases were loaded for
Jaclyn Lima who drove the ninth pitch of her at bat into center field plating one run before
Danielle Saporito drove home two RBI with a single to right field.
Kim LaPenta put down a perfect bunt allowing Lima to slide under the tag before Saporito crossed home plate on a sac fly from
Mikayla Melendez for a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Kean starting pitcher Courtney Yard helped out her own cause hitting her second home run of the season – a two-run shot – over the center field fence to put the Cougars on the board 2-6.
Ramapo scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Melendez drilled a triple to right field which allowed Lima and LaPenta to cross home plate to take an 8-2 lead.

Katrina Buczkowski (12-5) kept the Cougars off the board in the final inning of play to earn the win. She struck out eight and walked none while she scattered four hits. The Roadrunners collected seven hits in the game. Hernandez finished 2-3 with one run scored while Lima was 1-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Melendez led the team with three RBI as she went 1-3 at the plate.
For the Cougars, Yard (17-6) took the loss as she struck out two, walked two and scattered seven hits while she surrendered eight runs (six earned). Yard, Emily Sabo, Alexis D'Aloisio and Brooke Ennis each collected a hit. Kean moves on to play #6 Rutgers-Camden University in an elimination game on Friday, May 1st at 11am.
