BASEBALL SWEEPS TCNJ IN NJAC BASEBALL ACTION, 3-1 & 8-1

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team swept a NJAC conference double header today against The College of New Jersey, 3-1 in game one and 8-1 in game two.  The Roadrunners now stand at 20-11 overall and 9-5 in the NJAC, while the Lions fall to 13-15 overall, 6-8 in the NJAC.  

In game one, the Lions' Ben Varone led off the fifth inning with a triple to left field before he was knocked in by John Rizzi with a single to short stop for a 1-0 lead.  The Roadrunners tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth as Scott Shields knocked in Brandon Berger who led off the inning with a double to left field, 1-1. In the sixth inning, Jared Ensmenger singled through the left before Evan Ochlan pinch ran and stole second base.  Rafael Dela Crus then hit a single through the left side knocking in Ochlan, giving the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead.  In the seventh inning, Joe Venturino laced a single up the middle plating Brandon Berger for a 3-1 lead.

The Lions put the tying and winning runs on base in the top of the eighth but starting pitcher Walker Larson and the Ramapo defense got out of the jam to take game one, 3-1.  Larson improved to 6-1 as he struck out eight, walked four and scattered eight hits in the complete game win.  

The Roadrunners collected seven hits, Venturino and Connor Walsh collected two hits each, while Ensmenger, Dela Cruz, and Berger had one apiece.  

Steven Volpe (1-3) let up all seven hits in seven innings of work for the Lions, striking out two.  

In game two, Ramapo got on the board in the top of the second inning with three runs on three hits to take the 3-0 lead. Walsh walked and Dela Cruz doubled to center field with one out before Ryan Rinsky singled to left field to knock both runners in, 2-0.  Berger worked a walked before DeAngelis drove home Rinsky with a single, 3-0.  

In the bottom of the third the Roadrunners added one run when Walsh grounded out to the short stop to bring home Venturino who led off the inning with a single up the middle, 4-0.

The Roadrunners picked up three runs in the sixth inning on three hits, 7-0. Dela Cruz hit a double to center field to lead off the inning before he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rinsky ripped a single to plate Dela Cruz before Berger drove him home with a triple to center field. DeAngelis then drove home Berger with a sac fly to center for the final run of the inning, 7-0.

The Roadrunners collected one run in the eighth inning as Rinksy scored on a wild pitch, 8-0. He laced a single earlier in the inning to reach base.

The Lions scored one in the top of the ninth inning when Mike Follet came home on a wild pitch.  He led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a ground out by Alex Christian, 1-8.  

Tom Portesy remained undefeated this season 7-0, he struck out eight, walked five and gave up three hits in seven innings.  Kyle Doerr finished the game pitching two innings, striking out three.

DeAngelis and Rinsky both collected three hits for the Roadrunners.  

Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they host Baruch College at 2:00pm in a non-conference game.
