MORENO LEADS RAMAPO OVER RUTGERS-NEWARK

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team took two games from Rutgers-Newark University today with a 5-0 shutout in game two and a come from behind victory in eight innings in game two, 6-3.  The Roadrunners raise their record to 19-7 overall, 8-2 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders stand at 8-14 overall, 1-9 in the conference.
 
The game got moved from Rutgers-Newark to Ramapo College following a rain out on April 7th at Newark. The Scarlet Raiders remained the home team in the double header today.
 
In game one, Ramapo scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Nicole Mahoney drove a 0-2 pitch into the right-centerfield gap plating Melissa Moreno and Melanie Walling for the 2-0 lead. Moreno walked and Walling was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The Roadrunners scored one run in the fifth inning when Moreno singled up the middle driving home Danielle Saporito.  In the seventh, Ramapo added two insurance runs extending their lead 5-0. With one out Jaclyn Lima and Saporito each moved up on a stolen base before Moreno once again singled up the middle to plate both runs.
 
Ramapo starting pitcher Katrina Buczkowski (8-3) struck out six, did not walk a batter and scattered three hits in the complete game win. Moreno was 2-3 in the game with three RBI while Saporito was 1-3 with two runs scored and Mahoney was 1-2 with two RBI. Lima was 1-3 with one run scored and collected two stolen bases.
 
In game two, Ramapo lead 1-0 after the top of the second. Lima drove home Mahoney with a two-out single to left field. In the bottom of the second, the Scarlet Raiders scored two runs on not hits to take a 2-1 lead. Toniann Donde walked to lead off the inning before she scored on an infield ground out with the bases loaded to tie the game 1-1. Kayla Gallo later scored on a wild pitch to take the lead.
 
In the bottom of the third, Rutgers-Newark extended their lead by one run 3-1. Following a pitching change for the Roadrunners and with the bases loaded, Donde worked an eight pitch walk to plate the team's third run of the game.
 
Ramapo scored one run in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game 3-3. In the fifth, Saporito worked a leadoff walk and stole second before Moreno laced a double to left field allowing Saporito to come around and score 2-3. In the top of the seventh inning, LaPenta singled to left field and advanced to second when the ball was misplayed in left field.  She moved to third on an infield ground out before scoring on Walling's line drive to center field that was misplayed by the defense to tie the game 3-3. The Roadrunners held the Scarlet Raiders in the bottom of the seventh pushing the game into the eighth.
 
In the top of the eighth, Mahoney started on second base before she moved to third on a sac bunt from Grace Brennan. Nicole Hernandez then ripped an infield single to short stop beating out the throw as Mahoney came home with the eventual game winning run 4-3. Lima then put down a bunt single before Saporito reached on an infield error. Lima advanced to third and Saporito advanced to second on a infield fielder's choice from LaPenta while the Scarlet Raiders recorded an out at the plate. Moreno then hit a deep fly ball to the left-centerfield cap that fell between the two outfielders allowing Lima and Saporito to come around and score for a 6-3 lead.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, the Ramapo defense would make sure the Scarlet Raiders did not score. Ramapo recorded the first out on a sac bunt before the next batter lined out to Hernandez at short stop for the second out and she threw to Mikayla Melendez at third base to double off the runner for the final out of the game.
 
Paige Merle (4-0) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners. She spun a one-hitter over six innings of work and kept the Scarlet Raiders off the scoreboard following the third inning. She struck out three and walked two. Christina Brizek earned a no-decision today for Ramapo; she surrendered four hits in two innings of work and gave up three runs (two earned).
 
Hernandez and Lima each collected three hits apiece while Moreno added two of her own and three RBI.
 
Ramapo returns to action on Tuesday, April 14th when they host NJAC rival Kean University at 3:30pm.
