WERR, VENTURINO LEAD RAMAPO OVER PSU-BERKS

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team swept a pair of games from Penn State University – Berks, 8-4 in seven innings in game one and 9-6 in eight innings in game two. The Roadrunners improve to 12-6 overall while the Nittany Lions now stand at 5-7.
 
In game one the Roadrunners trailed 1-0 after the top of the first before coming back to score five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rob DeAngelis scored on Scott Peschiani's infield ground out before Chris Werr drove home Joe Venturino with a single to left field to take a 2-1 lead. Bobby Shannon laced a single through the left side of the infield plating two RBI before Ryan Rinsky drove in the final run of the inning with a single of his own to take a 5-1 lead.
 
In the second inning, Ramapo tacked on two more runs taking a 7-1. Venturino walked to lead off the inning and Peschiani was hit by a pitch before Werr drove home Venturino with a single to left field. Austin Unglaub then plated Peschiani with a sac fly to center field. Both teams each scored one run in the third inning before PSU added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. The Roadrunners held onto the four run lead to take game one, 8-4.
 
Mike Campbell earned the win for the Roadrunners. He improved to 2-0 overall as he scattered three hits over five innings with one strikeout and three walks. Tyler Curto worked the final two innings, striking out three and giving up only one hit. Werr finished the game 3-4 with 3 RBI and one run scored while Shannon was 2-4 with two RBI.
 
In game two, Ramapo trailed PSU 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning when the Roadrunners scored one run when Evan Ochlan ripped a double down the right field line plating DeAngelis with the teams first run of the game. In the fifth inning the Roadrunners scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Pinch runner Mike DiGirolamo scored on an infield error before DeAngelis scored on an infield ground out to tie the game 3-3. Werr drove home Ochlan with a sac fly to center field before Connor Walsh drove home laced a single to left field as Venturino came around to touch home plate with the fourth run of the inning. Ramapo added one run in the sixth to extend the lead 6-3 before PSU came back to tie the game in the seventh inning with three unearned runs.
 
The Roadrunners did not score in the bottom of the seventh forcing extra innings. PSU did not score in the top of the eighth allowing the Roadrunners a chance in the bottom half of the inning. Rinsky led off with a walk and DeAngelis beat out a bunt single before Rich Policastro moved the runners up with a sac bunt. Venturino then drove the third pitch he saw over the left field fence for a walk off three-run home run, his fifth home run of the season to take game two 9-6.
 
Ramapo pounded out nine hits in the game. DeAngelis finished 3-4 with three runs scored while Venturino was 2-5 with two runs scored and five RBI. John Doherty started the game for Ramapo, earning the no decision. He struck out one, walked two and scattered four hits over 4.1 innings of work. Brian Cottrell came in relief, striking out one over two innings of work. He scattered two hits but gave up three runs, none earned. Mark Doyle worked the final 1.2 innings as he earned his first win of the season. He struck out two, walked one and did not give up a hit.
 
Ramapo returns to action on Tuesday, March 31st when they host Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference game at 3:30pm.
