Winter Haven, FL: The Ramapo College baseball team swept Springfield College today, 14-2 & 9-1, in two seven-inning games. The Roadrunners improve to 5-0 overall while Springfield drops to 0-2.
In game one, starting pitcher
Tom Portesy (2-0) scattered four hits over five innings of work while he struck out nine and walked only two. With two outs in the first inning,
Joe Venturino belted his first collegiate home run to take a 1-0 lead before Ramapo added four more runs in the inning.

Jared Ensmenger ripped a double to the left centerfield gap allowing Werr to come around and score. Rob DeAngelis then picked up two RBI with a single, scoring
Scott Paulus and Ensmenger and putting the Roadrunners up 5-0.
Springfield added two runs in the top of the second to come within three, 2-5 before Ramapo added nine more runs for a 14-2 lead. In the third inning, Ensmenger picked up an RBI sac fly, plating Werr before
Rafael Dela Cruz ripped a double down the left field line allowing Paulus to score for the 7-2 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning Ramapo added another two runs, 9-2, when DeAngelis singled home Paulus and pinch runner Matt Chemis. In the fifth inning Ramapo added five hits on five runs aided by one Springfield error taking a 14-2 lead.
Tyler Curto and
Charles Weinkofsky pitched one inning each in relief without giving up a run to complete the 14-2 seven inning win for the Roadrunners.
For Ramapo, Dela Cruz, Venturino, Werr and
Bobby Shannon each collected two hits apiece while DeAngelis finished the game 3-4 with four RBI.
In game two, the Roadrunners scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back taking game two, 9-1.
Mike Campbell (1-0) earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts over five innings in work.
Kyle Doerr and
Rob Meola each pitched one inning in relief for Ramapo. Doerr struck out two in the sixth inning while Meola did not give up a hit in the seventh.
In the top of the first inning, Dela Cruz singled up the middle before stealing second base and scored on Venturino's double to left field before scoring on an infield groundout from Werr to take a 2-0 lead.
Springfield got one run back in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI double from Bergami. Ramapo added one run in the fourth inning on and RBI double from Scott Schields plating
Kevin Kelly for a 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning the Roadrunners added three runs for a 6-1 lead. The bases were loaded for Werr who hit a fielder's choice to the second basemen. Springfield tried getting the force out at the plate but the throw sailed high allowing two runners to score for Ramapo. Kelly then lifted a sac fly to center field plating Peschiani before Springfield was able to get the final out of the inning. Ramapo added three runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to extend their lead, 9-1.
Venturino and Schields are the only two Roadrunners to collect multiple hits in the game, each finishing the game 2-3. Ramapo recorded ten hits in the game.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon at 4pm when they take on University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth.
