Newburgh, NY: The Lady Roadrunner lacrosse team opened the 2015 season today with a tough, 10-14 loss to Mt. St. Mary College. Ramapo falls to 0-1 while MSM opens the year at 1-0.
Mt. St. Mary opened the scoring first under five minutes into the game with a free position shot from Katie Gattoni, before Ramapo's
Beth McGraw tied the game off an assist from
Marissa Cooney just 14 seconds later. The two teams traded a goal each to come to a 2-2 tie, before Gattoni and Kayla Goman posted back-to-back goals to jump ahead 4-2 with 13:17 to play.
Alyssa Tachon scored an unassisted goal for Ramapo to close the gap, but it wasn't enough as MSM pushed to a 7-3 lead with goals from Gattoni, Christina Ryan, and Shannon McGuinness. With just 34 seconds left to go in the half,
Lindsay Hughes got Ramapo another goal off an assist from
Colleen Manley to head into halftime trailing 4-7. Mt. St. Mary out shot the Roadrunners 16-8 in the first half of play, while
Monica Bubello blocked five shots in goal for Ramapo with seven goals against. Emily Carboine made three saves in the net for MSM.
Hughes struck quickly at the start of the second half to put Ramapo within two goals, 5-7, but Gattoni and Amanda Clemens scored back-to-back for MSM to put the team 9-5 over Ramapo. With 20 minutes left to play,
Katie Duca and McGraw scored for Ramapo but Goman and McGuinness put MSM up 11-7 with 12:24 to play. The two teams scored three more goals each in the remainder of the game leaving Mt. St. Mary with the 14-10 win over Ramapo.
Jessica Meyers finished the game for Ramapo making two saves, while Carnoine made an additional three for MSM. Shots in the second half went even as MSM got the win in non-conference action.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, March 4th when they host Johnson & Wales at 3:30pm.
