Mahwah, NJ: The #8/12 Montclair State University women's basketball team remains undefeated in conference play after defeating Ramapo College 64-39 today at the Bradley Center. The Red Hawks improve to 6-1 overall 4-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners fall to 2-6 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
The Roadrunners scored the first basket of the game as
Bridgette Buckalew hit a jumper under the basket with 9:10 on the clock. MSU came back with a three-pointer from Ceballos before
Kellie Lane scored a basket for the Roadrunner to take a 4-3 lead. Ceballos recorded her second three of the game before Sire put the Red Hawks up 8-4 with a basket of her own with just over five minutes to play in the quarter. The Roadrunners went on a mini 4-1 run to cut the MSU lead to one before Yazmine Lacey and Rachael Krauss hit back-to-back shots for a 14-8 lead.
Grace Elliott hit a basket for the Roadrunners with 1:19 on the clock before Sire recorded a jumper and Ceballos ended the quarter with a three pointer, her fourth of the game.
The Red Hawks limited the Roadrunners to eight points in the second quarter while they went into the locker room at halftime up 41-18 as they tallied seven three-pointers in the half. MSU shot 48% (14-29) from the field, 46% (7-15) from the three-point line and 42% (6-14) from the foul line in the first half. Kayla Ceballos was perfect in the half going 4-4 from the floor, all three-pointers leading the team with 12 points. Katie Sire added seven points and five steals.
Lane led Ramapo in the half with six points while the team shot 31% (7-22) from the field, 16% (1-6) from the three-point line and 75% (3-4) from the foul line.
Montclair continued to build their lead in the third and fourth quarters. The Red Hawks out scored the Roadrunners 11-8 in the third while Ramapo held a 13-12 advantage in the fourth. MSU took their biggest lead of the game in the third quarter with a 32 point spread, 51-19. The Roadrunners went on a mini 7-1 run to end the third and heading into the fourth down 26-52. The Red Hawks did not allow the Roadrunners to cut the lead under 21 points in the fourth coming away with a 25 point win 64-39.
Ceballos led MSU with 12 points while Sire added 11 of her own. The team shot 33% (20-59) from the field, 40% (9-22) from the three-point line and 53% (15-28) from the foul line.
Lane led the Roadrunners with 13 points while
Bintou Berete grabbed a team high 11 rebounds. The team shot 31% (13-42) from the field, 20% (2-10) from the three point line and 73% (11-15) from the foul line.
The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to New Jersey City University on December 9th in an NJAC game starting at 6pm.
