Jersey City, NJ: In a thrilling overtime victory on the road, the Ramapo College men's soccer team prevailed over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University, 4-3, to grab their fist win in conference play (1-4-1) and their seventh overall on the year (7-6-2). The Gothic Knights fall to 1-12 overall and 0-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
It was
Justin Olaya who posted the game-winning goal for the Roadrunners in the overtime period at 98:15 giving Ramapo their first win of the season in the conference. The Gothic Knights held a slight advantage in shots at 22-20 and Ramapo came out on top in corner kicks at 9-4. Rookie
Ryan Sprague made four saves in goal for Ramapo while NJCU's John Riggs posted six of his own.
Ramapo got on the board at the start of the game just over five minutes in when rookie
Edward Franzoni ripped an upper ninety shot past the NJCU netminder to take a 1-0 lead. At 12:39 Davauni Brown tied the game with a shot in the far left corner of the goal past the diving Sprague before Ramapo went on top, 2-1 with a goal from
Ryan Campbell off a long pass from
Jorge Castro. Campbell beat two defenders and the goalkeeper for his ninth goal of the year. The score would remain at 2-1 at the halftime buzzer with Ramapo leading in shots with a commanding 9-2.
In the second half, the Gothic Knights controlled the offensive game collecting 18 shots to Ramapo's six. At 61:14, Tyler Krychkowski posted a goal of his own to tie the game at 2-2, before Castro ripped a shot past the NJCU netminder to put Ramapo on top once again, 3-2 as he capitalized on a penalty kick. It was Benedict Adundo at 77:03 who tied the game once again, 3-3, a score that stood until the regulation buzzer to force overtime play. The Gothic Knights had a chance to take the game at 85:43 with a penalty kick opportunity but Sprague came up huge for Ramapo to keep the game tied at three goals apiece.
The Roadrunners would take five shots to NJCU's two in the overtime period, one which came from Olaya off an assist from Campbell to take the game on the road, 4-3. Ramapo played 14-plus minutes a man down but was able to surpass the Gothic Knights on the road.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, October 17th when they host TCNJ at home at 1pm.
