Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team dropped a tough 43-56 decision tonight to the Cougars of Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up at the Bradley Center. Behind 11 points from Deserai Vazquez, the Cougars improve to 11-8 overall, 6-6 in the conference. Ramapo falls to 4-15 overall, 0-12 in the conference.
Vazquez shot 3-6 and put away two long shots to lead the Cougars to the 13-point victory in Mahwah. Jazmine Davis posted nine points and pulled down seven rebounds while Jaquetta Owens and Davis each grabbed four steals on the night. The Cougars hit a combined 21-53 (39%) in the win, as they forced 29 Ramapo turnovers.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 3-0 start before the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run, capped off with a three-point basket from Owens at 16:33, to take a 7-3 advantage. Ramapo came within one point, 8-9 with a jump shot from
Alyson Oostdyk, before taking the lead, 12-11, at 12:45 with a two-point goal from Tierney Hendersen. Over the next seven minutes, the two teams traded baskets and the lead until after the game's fourth tie, 22-22, Kean connected six straight points to close out the half, 28-22 over Ramapo. AnnaRose Pierre led the Cougars with six points as the team went 12-31 (38%), while the Roadrunners hit 10-24 (42%) behind five points each from
Kellie Lane and
Jina Crawford.
At the 15:04 minute mark in the second half, with the Cougars leading 32-26, the Roadrunners connected five points to come within one, 31-32, with a basket off the steal from Oostdyk at 13:21, forcing a Kean timeout. Lane gave the Roadrunners a 33-32 lead with two good free throws, before Oostdyk extended Ramapo's advantage with a two-point goal at 10:54 to go ahead, 35-32. A 9-0 run from Kean, capped off by a jump shot from Mikeera Brown, gave the Cougars a 41-35 lead at 8:23 forcing a Roadrunner timeout. Over the next three minutes the Cougars worked to a double-digit spread, taking an 11-point lead, 50-39, with an and-one play from Brown. In the final minutes the Cougars proved to be too much for Ramapo wrapping up the night with the 56-43 win. Brown led the Cougars with seven points as the team went 9-22 (41%). Ramapo's
Dejha Flood led the team in the final half with seven points. Ramapo hit 6-22 (27%) from the field.
Elliott finished the night with a double-double for Ramapo which included ten rebounds and ten points, while Lane finished the game with nine points.
Kerrie Kosakowski dished out five assists while grabbing three steals in the loss. The Roadrunners combined hitting 16-46 (35%) from the field.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, January31st when they host Montclair State University at 1pm.
