James Merges scored what turned out to be the game winner in the Ramapo College men's soccer team's 4-1 victory over UMass-Dartmouth today at the Athletic Center. With the victory the Roadrunners took home the 2014 President's Cup Championship crown, and improve to 2-0 on the year. Today's win marked the 100th career coaching victory for Head Coach
DJ Pinton.
UMass Dartmouth (1-1) got on the scoreboard first at 28:20 when Max Deulofeu posted an unassisted goal to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained until the halftime buzzer, where Ramapo outshot UMass Dartmouth 7-2. Luis Carranza made two saves in goal for UMass while Ramapo's
Matthew Hernandez collected one.
In the second half, it was
Dan Boffa, off a dish from
Zach Savacool, who tied up the game for the Roadrunners, the goal coming just over five minutes into the half. The Roadrunners took a 2-1 lead with a goal from
James Merges. He was assisted by rookie
Kevin Villanueva with 18:02 left to play in the game. Rookie
Modou Sowe capitalized on a penalty kick with 8:57 left in the game after being taken down on a break away, before rookie
Justin Olaya scored one of his own with under two minutes on the clock to wrap up the non-conference 4-1 win. Ramapo again out shot UMass, 12-3.
In the consolation match-up, DeSales defeated John Jay College,3-0, collecting their first win of the 2014 season. With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 0-2 overall.
Wes Frebel opened the scoring for the Bulldogs at 6:17 on an unassisted goal, to put DeSales up 1-0. At 30:21, Alex Peek placed a corner for Mike Lawler, who ripped a shot past the John Jay netminder to go up two goals to none. The Bulldogs went up 3-0 with a goal from Damian Grycel, off an assist from Patrick Roche with just over seven minutes remaining in the half.
DeSales held a 9-5 edge in shots for the half, while also collecting a 4-1 advantage in corners.
In the second half of play, the game remained scoreless, giving DeSales the 3-0 victory in the consolation match-up of the tournament. DeSales finished the game with a 12-9 advantage in shots over John Jay.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, September 7th when they travel to FDU-Florham for a 7pm match-up.
