SOFTBALL GETS SWEEP OVER MT. ST. MARY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team swept a non-conference double header today from Mount Saint Mary College today at the Athletic Center. Ramapo won game one, 3-1 while they won game two, 2-1 in eight innings. The Roadrunners improve to 11-12 overall while the Knights fall to 18-10 on the year.

In game one, junior Kim LaPenta ripped a double to center field before stealing third base during the next at bat. Sophomore Danielle Saporito then drove a single into left field, allowing LaPenta to score, 1-0.

Neither team could push a run across the plate until the sixth inning when the Knights scored one run to tie the game. Breanna Depasquale recorded an infield ground out to plate Brianne Germain, 1-1.

In the bottom half of the inning Ramapo scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Rookie Nicole Hernandez led off with a single down the line before she moved to second on a sac bunt from rookie Taylor May. Junior Jaclyn Lima then smacked a triple to left field, driving home Hernandez with the eventual game winning run. LaPenta then dropped down a sac bunt as Lima raced home sliding under the tag for the team's third run of the game.

The Knights got the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh with one runner on base with two outs before senior Harley Masiello got a ground out to end the game. Masiello (5-7) only surrendered two hits while striking out four and walked none in the win. Lima, LaPenta and Saporito each collected one hit and one RBI in the game.

In game two, Ramapo scored in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. LaPenta drove home Lima with a single to center field.

In the fourth inning, the Knights were able to scratch a run across the plate to tie the game, 1-1. Stephanie Karcher scored from second base on an infield error that went into center field, allowing her to come around and score.

In the top of the eighth, with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Depasquale was placed on second base for the Knights. She moved to third on a sac bunt before Stephanie Karcher grounded out to third base. Sophomore Mikayla Melendez checked the runner at third before firing to first base to get the second out as Depasquale broke for home. Sophomore first basemen Erin Witherspoon then fired home to sophomore catcher Melissa Moreno who applied the tag for the third out of the inning.

Rookie pinch runner, Brianna Dziedzic was placed on second for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the eighth inning. Witherspoon put down a bunt to third base to move Dziedzic up one base, the throw from the Knights sailed high of first base allowing Dziedzic to touch home plate with the game winning run, 2-1.

Senior Nicole Schneider (5-3) pitched a complete game, she struck out one and walked none while scattering seven hits.

Sophomore Danielle Saporito was 2-3 in the game while Lima, LaPenta, Melendez, Witherspoon and Hernandez all collected one hit a piece.

The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, April 12th at 1:00pm when they travel to NJAC rival Rowan University.
