Mahwah, NJ: Behind 15 points from
Jackie Jerkovich and 13 from
Doris Ilic, the Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated non-conference rival John Jay College, 61-30 today at the Bradley Center to improve to 4-5 overall. John Jay falls to 1-7 with the loss.
Jerkovich wrapped up the day hitting 7-15 for 15 points as the team shot a combined 22-58 (38%). Ilic went 6-11 from the field for her 13 points and
I'india Davenport grabbed a team high eight rebounds. Jerkovich collected seven steals in the win. The Roadrunners forced 36 John Jay turnovers and held the Bloodhounds to just 11 field goals on the day.
It took almost three minutes for points to get on the scoreboard and it was John Jay's Terri Chu who drained a three-point goal to take the first lead of the game, 3-0. Davenport and
Tierney Henderson hit back-to back jump shots to put Ramapo in the lead and the Roadrunners never looked back as they climbed to a 21-10 lead at the buzzer. With John Jay leading 5-4 with 11:42 on the clock, Jerkovich sparked an 11-0 run to put the Roadrunners ahead, 15-5. With 3:03 left in the half, Chu hit another three to come within seven, 10-17, but Jerkovich and Ilic closed the half with a two-point goal each to head into the locker room leading the Bloodhounds, 21-10. Jerkovich led Ramapo with six points as the team shot 9-27 (33%) from the field. Ramapo forced 24 John Jay turnovers in the half. The Bloodhounds were led by Chu who sank six points.
John Jay scored the first two baskets of the second half to come within six, 15-21, but the Roadrunners responded stringing together ten points to jump ahead 31-15 with 15:33 on the clock. The run was capped off with a basket from Jerkovich. Almost eight minutes later, Jerkovich drained a three-point goal to put Ramapo ahead, 46-24, and the Roadrunners continued to spread their lead down the stretch, taking their biggest lead of 31 at the game's ending buzzer. Jerkovich and Ilic netted nine points each in the final half of play as the team went 13-31 (42%) from the field. Chu collected five points leading John Jay and Brianna Cunningham pulled down a team high 11 boards, as the team shot 7-37 (19%) from the field.
Chu finished with a team leading 11 points for John Jay and Cunningham collected 15 rebounds. Amanda Jimenez pulled down 11 rebounds in the loss. John Jay finished the day shooting 11-54 (20%) from the field.
The Roadrunners return to action in the New Year when they travel to the Gwynedd Mercy Tournament to take on Trinity College on January 3rd at 4pm.
