Ve'Shawn Polite, the Ramapo College men's basketball team posted an 84-70 victory over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University tonight to improve to 6-2 overall, 3-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. NJCU falls to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Polite shot 4-9 from the floor and 11-14 from the charity stripe as he led the Roadrunners to a 14-point conference win on Ramapo's home court. The Roadrunners hit a combined 19-51 (37%) from the field, and 45-55 (82%) from the free throw line in the win. Christopher Mosley collected 18 points and
Josh Ford added 11, as
Thomas Bonacum pulled down a team leading 12 rebounds.
Ramapo opened the game to a 5-0 lead before working to a ten-point advantage, 15-5, when
Nick Stanek dropped a free throw through with 11:09 on the clock. A three-pointer from NJCU's Jourdan Roberson cut the lead to seven, but Ford would respond with a jump shot to jump ahead by nine. Roberson struck again nailing a three to put the Gothic Knights within six points, 11-17, but seven straight free throws would give the Roadrunners a 24-11 lead with under seven to play in the half. NJCU would come within six points at 5:06 with an and-one play from Khalid Muhammad, but the Roadrunners responded with a 7-0 run to again go ahead by 13, (34-21), with 3:30 on the clock. After another three-point goal from Roberson with 2:52 to play, the Roadrunners would score the final points of the half, working to their biggest lead of 19, 43-24, at the buzzer with a jumper from Bonacum. The Roadrunners hit 11-35 (31%) from the field in the half, 21-26 from the free throw line, while Polite led the way with 12 points. Roberson was NJCU's leading scorer with nine, as the team hit a combined 9-39 (23%).
The Roadrunners quickly worked to a 20-point advantage to start the second half, and held a double-digit lead until the 11:42 minute mark, when a three from David Cole closed the gap to 44-53. It would be the closest the Gothic Knights would come as Ramapo spent the next seven-plus minutes climbing to an 18-point advantage (74-56), capped off with a jumper from
Jermaine Peart at 4:24. The Roadrunners proved to be too much for the Gothic Knights as they took home the 84-70 conference win at the Bradley Center. Moseley netted 13 points in the half for Ramapo and Polite collected seven, as Ramapo went 8-16 (50%) from the field. The Roadrunners sank an additional 24 free throws in the final minutes. Neville Joseph led NJCU with a double-double including 12 points and 11 rebounds. The team sank 19 field goals on 41 attempts (46%) in the half.
Joseph finished the night with 16 rebounds and 15 points, while Muhammad added 15 points of his own for NJCU. Roberson finished the night with 12 points. The team hit 28-80 (35%) and Roberson led in assists with four.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, December 13th when they travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference match-up at 1pm.
