Kelly Haspel hit a layup to seal a come back victory by the Ramapo College women's basketball team in a 65-64 win over NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University.
The Roadrunners now stand at 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference while the Scarlet Raiders stand at 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the NJAC.
In the second half, Rutgers Newark was up 14 points, 59-45, with 4:06 left in the game before the Roadrunners battled back with a 20-5 run to end the game. Senior
Anna Fucci hit a three pointer to come within five, 56-61 (2:04) before Ramapo made back to back foul shots from junior
Jackie Jerkovich and senior
Alayna Donadio, to come within two, 60-62, with 46 seconds on the clock. Rutgers Newark made two foul shots with 11 seconds on the clock to take a four point lead before Ramapo pushed the ball up the court and Jerkovich connected on a three pointer with 4.6 seconds to come within one, 64-65. The Scarlet Raiders committed a turnover on the in bounds play allowing Ramapo to get the ball back under the basket. With 1.6 seconds on the clock Jerkovich dished the ball to Haspel who made a layup with 0.2 seconds left in the game for the game winning basket, 65-64.
Ramapo was down two heading into the locker room at halftime, 26-24 before they outscored the Scarlet Raiders down the stretch. The Roadrunners connected on seven three pointers in the game as Haspel, Fucci and Jerkovich all made two a piece. Haspel led the team with 14 points, including a perfect 4-4 from the foul line. Jerkovich was also perfect from the foul line (4-4) as she scored 12 points. She also recorded three assists and three steals. Micaela Moore added nine points, two steals and one block. The Roadrunners shot 34% (17-49) from the field, 35% (7-20) from beyond the three point line and 77% (24-31) from the foul line in the game.
The Scarlet Raiders out rebounded Ramapo, 44-28, in the game. They shot 41% (25-61) from the field, 35% (6-17) from beyond the three point line and 53% (8-15) from the foul line. ShaQuanna Marshall nailed four three pointers in the game as she finished with 15 points while Jade Howard connected for 14 points and 17 rebounds. Arianna Williams added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Ramapo returns to action this Saturday as they host NJAC foe Rowan University at 1pm in the Bradley Center.
