SOFTBALL SWEEPS RUTGERS CAMDEN

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Camden, NJ:  Behind strong pitching performances from juniors Harley Masiello and Nicole Schneider, the Ramapo College softball team swept the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers Camden, 1-0 and 3-1 on the road, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up.  Ramapo's two victories puts them standing at .500 in the conference at 2-2, and 9-7 overall, snapping Rutgers Camden's 13-game winning streak.  The Scarlet Raptors fall to  16-5 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC.

Game 1:  The Roadrunners got the only break they needed in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore centerfielder Jaclyn Lima reached second base on a leadoff infield throwing error. She advanced to third on a ground out and scored the game's only run on a RBI single to right field by junior first baseman Kristen Wilson. It was the only at bat of the game for Wilson, who entered the game defensively in the sixth inning.

Masiello pitched a one-hit shutout, walking two and striking out six.  She improves to  in 4-3 on the year. Masiello was pitching a no-hitter until Raptor senior first baseman Kaitlyn Gaskill, led off the fifth inning with a base hit to left field. An error on a sacrifice bunt helped Gaskill get as far as third base with one out, but Masiello got out of the jam giving the Roadrunners the 1-0 conference win.

Game 2:  Rutgers-Camden scored an unearned run in the first after a fielder's choice by freshman third baseman Katie Larson, put her on first, and after a double to left-center moved her to third. Larson scored on a wild throw to first.

That run stood until the fifth when Ramapo senior shortstop Kelsey Higgins hit a seemingly harmless ground ball to first base. But with no first base coverage, Higgins stood at the bag with two outs.  An infield error followed that play and Lima loaded the bases with a single. Freshman pinch-hitter Erin Witherspoon followed with a two-run single to left field and junior leftfielder Caitlin Smith plated Lima with a double to right center.

Schneider (4-4) finished with a five-hitter, one unearned run, no walks and three strikeouts.

Ramapo returns to action when they host Drew University on Thursday, April 4th at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader match-up.
