RAMAPO SWEEPS STEVENS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Weehawken, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team extended their winning streak to three games with a double header sweep of non-conference rival Steven Insistute of Technology today at Weehawken Waterfront Park. The Roadrunners defeated the Ducks, 10-8 in game one and 10-0 in five innings in game two.

In game one the Roadrunners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Rookie Tess Sala singled with one out before junior Caitlin Smith ripped a single to left field. Senior Lisa Orlando then cracked her first home run of the season for the three run lead.

Stevens came back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning. They scored four runs on three hits and one Ramapo error to take the lead. Ramapo matched the Ducks run total in the third inning when they scored four runs of their own in the top of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Back to back singles from seniors Amanda Kent and Janet Brown and an RBI double from sophomore Taylor Boffalo, plated the first run of the inning. Pinch hitter rookie Erin Witherspoon then smacked a double to score Brown and Boffalo. Sala then doubled home Witherspoon and sophomore Jaclyn Lima, 7-4.

The Ducks scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, to tie the game at seven. Ramapo would take the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Kim LaPenta knocked home Lima with a single to center field before Smith ripped a home run to left field to take the 10-7 lead. Stevens would add one more run in the seventh inning, 10-8, before Ramapo recorded the final out of the game.

Ramapo starting pitcher junior Harley Masiello worked the first three innings as she struck out one and walked two. She scattered five hits while giving up six runs, four earned. Rookie Danielle Isenberg finished the game in the circle for Ramapo, she struck out two and walked two would scattering six hits in the final 4.0 innings of work.

The Roadrunners got all the runs they would need in game two in the first inning as they scored five to take the lead. Lima walked and stole second before rookie Danielle Saporito beat out a bunt single allowing Lima to advance to third base. Mikyla Melendez singled to load the bases before LaPenta was hit by a pitch, allowing Lima to cross home plate with the first run of the game. Kent relieved LaPenta on the bases before Witherspoon walked with the bases loaded and Saporitio scored, 2-0. Sophomore Melanie Eskin then singled down the left field line to pick up two RBI as Kent and Melendez each scored. Rookie Melanie Walling scored the final run of the inning for Ramapo with a single to center field allowing Witherspoon to touch home plate, 5-0.

Witherspoon drove a pitch over the leftfield wall, her first of the year, in the third inning to score the only run of the inning for Ramapo, 6-0. Kent tripled to lead off the fifth inning before Eskin drove Kent in with a one out single. Rookie Hannah Mucerino ripped a double left field to pick up two RBI, as Eskin and Sala scored on the play. Lima then ripped a double to left field, allowing Mucerino to come around and score, 10-0.

Ramapo held the Ducks in the bottom of the fifth inning as they came away with a 10-0 win. Ramapo starting pitcher Nicole Schneider went the distance in the run rule shortened game. She struck out two and surrendered only three hits over five innings of work.

The Roadrunners return to action on Friday when they open up NJAC conference play at home against rival TCNJ at 3:00pm.
