SOFTBALL TAKES TWO AT NTC SPRING GAMES

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Claremont, FL:  The Ramapo College softball team defeated Plymouth State University, 4-2 before taking game two against the University of Dubuque, 7-2. Ramapo improves to 4-2 overall.

In game one, Ramapo got on the board in the top of the first inning when senior Amanda Kent drew a one out walk and junior Caitlin Smith ripped a double to left field allowing Kent to cross home plate for the 1-0 lead. Plymouth State came back and tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run, 1-1.

The Roadrunners broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Rookie Melanie Walling ripped a double down the left field line before being lifted for sophomore pinch runner Melanie Eskin. With two outs, sophomore pinch hitter Kim LaPenta punched a single through the left side of the infield as Eskin scored. LaPenta stole second base before sophomore Jaclyn Lima hit an inside the park home run for the 4-1 margin.

Plymouth State got one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning, drawing a bases loaded walk, 4-2. The Ramapo defense held Plymouth State the final two innings as junior pitcher Harley Masiello came into the game in the seventh with no outs and a runner on first base. Masiello recorded a strikeout for the first out of the inning before inducing a pop up to the outfield and infield ground out to earn the save.

Ramapo starting pitcher Nicole Schneider (2-2) strike out five with two walks while she scattered eight hits over six innings of work. Masiello only needed nine pitches to finish the seventh inning.

In game two, Ramapo took a 2-1 after two innings of play and never looked back. In the bottom of the second inning, senior Lisa Orlando led off with a double to left field before junior Kristen Wilson ripped a two-out single up the middle to plate Orlando to tie the game at one. Junior Melanie Eskin then laced a single to left field allowing Wilson to score for the 2-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, Ramapo scored five runs on five hits to take a 7-1 lead. Rookies Tess Sala and Danielle Saporito each singled to get on base before rookie Melissa Moreno ripped a single up the middle plating both runs, 4-1. Moreno was lifted for pinch runner senior Amanda Kent before Orlando walked. Both runners moved up one base on LaPenta's sacrifice bunt before Kent scored on rookie Mikayla Melendez's sacrifice fly to center field. Rooke Hanna Mucerino plated the final two runs of the inning with a single up the middle to pick up two RBIs as Orlando and Wilson came around to score, 7-1.

Dubuque added one run in the top of the seventh before the Ramapo starting pitcher Harley Masiello (2-0) induced a groundout to end the game. Masiello struck out seven and walked only one in the complete game win. Wilson was 2-2 with two runs scored and one RBI while Mucerino was 2-3 with two RBI.

Ramapo returns to action tomorrow morning at the NTC Spring Games when they take on Manchester University at 9:00am and Washington and Jefferson College at 11:00am.
