SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM NJCU, 5-1 & 3-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jersey City, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team defeated NJAC foe New Jersey City University today at Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Center, 5-1 and 3-2. The Roadrunners improve to 23-5 overall, 8-4 in the conference while the Gothic Knights fall to 11-21, 2-10 in the NJAC.

NJCU took a 1-0 lead late in the game with a two-out bases loaded walk by Marissa Bariso as Megan Ginter crossed home plate.

Ramapo answered back in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Janet Brown walked to lead off the inning before being lifted for pinch runner Jaclyn Lima. Lima would steal second base before Lisa Orlando ripped a ground-rule double allowing Lima to come around and score the game tying run, 1-1. Melanie Eskin pinch ran for Orlando before she was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Boffalo and later scored on an infield error by the Gothic Knights, 2-1. Kim LaPenta and Amanda Kent each singled to load the bases as Tiffany Fischer reached on a fielder's choice while Kelsey Higgins scored from third base on a infield throwing error, 3-1. Danielle Rothenberger then laced a single into left field allowing LaPenta to score the inning's fourth run, 4-1.  The Roadrunners added one run in the seventh when Orlando and Boffalo ripped back to back doubles for the 5-1 lead.

Lauren Shaw earned her 14th victory of the season in the complete game win. She struck out five while scattering five hits.  Orlando, Boffalo and LaPenta each collected two hits on three at-bats in game one.

In game two, Ramapo held off a late rally from NJCU for a 3-2 victory. The Roadrunners scored three runs in the top of the first inning while NJCU scored one run each in the bottom half of the third and fifth innings.

In the top of the first LaPenta led off with a walk and stole second before Fischer walked and Rothenberger singled to load the bases for Caitlin Smith. She drew a bases loaded walk before Boffalo ripped a single to left field as Fischer came around to score the game's second run, 2-0. With two outs, Higgins picked up an RBI with an infield ground out allowing Rothenberger to touch home plate for a 3-0 lead.

NJCU scored in the third to shrink the Ramapo lead to 3-1 before they scored their second run in the fifth inning on an infield error by Ramapo, 3-2. NJCU would make it interesting for the Roadrunners in the seventh with a lead off single from Ginter. Ramapo starting pitcher Nicole Schneider was then lifted for Shaw who was able to get out of the jam with an infield ground out as the Ramapo defense got the lead runner at second base for the first out of the inning. The Gothic Knights would then hit into a game ending double play as Rebecca Satz lined out to shortstop Higgins and she fired over to first base to double off Jess Mucerino for the game's final out.

Schneider improved to 6-0 on the mound with the win, she struck out one and walked none while surrendering eight hits. Boffalo continued to stay hot at the plate with a 2-3 performance, the only Roadrunners to record a multiple hit game.  Ramapo only posted three hits in the game to NJCU's eight as Ramapo left 12 runners on base.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Thursday when they travel to non-conference rival Moravian College for a 3:30pm doubleheader.
