Box Score Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team defeated NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University tonight at the Bradley Center, 79-52, behind 22 points from senior
Elgin Brown. Ramapo, ranked #11 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, remains undefeated at 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the NJAC. With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders fall to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Ramapo shot 42% (30-70) from the field and 66% (14-21) from the foul line as Brown recorded his third double-double of the season with his 22 points and 11 rebounds. He chipped in two blocks and three steals.
The Roadrunners took a 34-23 halftime lead as Brown sank 12 first half points. Ramapo led the entire first half of play, pulling away with 12:19 on the clock, when Brown made a jumper off a steal from
Anthony LoRusso, 14-6. The Scarlet Raiders cut the lead to three on three occasions before Christian Garcia hit a jumper with 5:30 to go, to close the gap to three points again, 21-18. Just under two minutes later, Ramapo would go on a 9-0 run, sparked by a three-pointer from
Patrick O'Connell, and capped off by a jumper from Brown, to take a 30-18 advantage. The Roadrunners would take their biggest lead (14) of the half, with just 40 seconds to play, when
Will Sanborn drained a three-pointer, followed by a good free throw from LoRusso. The Scarlet Raiders would close out the half with an and-one play to come within 11 points heading into the locker room.
In the second half, with 17:09 on the clock, the Scarlet Raiders cut the lead to 38-30 with a jumper from Belfield. The Scarlet Raiders came within six with 16:42 remaining, before Ramapo went on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 14, 48-34, with a jumper from LoRusso with 13:44 on the clock. Ramapo kept its lead by a margin of 15 or more from the 7:25 mark, climbing to a 25 point lead with 41 seconds to go in the game. Thiel sank two foul shots with 26 seconds on the clock to close out the game, 79-52.
Sanborn went 3-7 from beyond the three-point line as he totaled 15 points in the win. Thiel posted a double-double of his own with 13 points and ten rebounds. LoRusso added nine points and a team-high five assists, while Treadwell contributed with nine points and five rebounds.
Ramapo returns to action this Saturday when they host non-conference rival St. Joseph's College of Long Island at 3:00pm.
