Box Score Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team fell to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark University tonight at the Bradley Center, 67-55. The Roadrunners fall to 10-6 overall, 2-4 in the NJAC while Rutgers improves to 13-4 and 4-2 in the conference.
Jackie Jerkovich got the Roadrunners on the board in the first half with a three pointer, 3-0 (19:18) before the Scarlet Raiders scored their first basket at 18:52 by ShaQuanna Marshall. The Roadrunners led by four, 6-2 before Rutgers Newark tied the game at seven all on a made three by Kendra Johnson (14:00). They took a lead the next play off a Ramapo turnover and extended their lead to four, 13-9 before
Kelly Haspel made a three and
Brittany Howes followed with a jumper of her own and a foul shot to take a two point lead, 15-13 (11:30). Johnson came back with a three for the Scarlet Raiders before they took a five point lead, 22-17 with 7:48 to go in the first half. Ramapo cut the lead to one, 23-22 on back to back jumpers by Gripenburg and
Alexa Ryan. Ryan was fouled on the play and made her free throw with 3:54 on the clock. Rutgers Newark went on a 8-3 run to close out the half up 30-25.
The Roadrunners cut the lead to one at the start of the second half on jumper by
Alex Milne before the Scarlet Raiders went on an 8-0 run to go up nine, 38-29, capped off by a jumper by Lori Nieves. Ramapo went on a 8-2 run of their own as Ryan hit a three pointer to come within three, 40-37 with 12:35 left in the game. Rutgers-Newark stretched their lead back to nine on a jumper by Kendra Johnson (7:51) before Ramapo went on another 8-2 run cutting the lead back to three, 51-48 with 5:06 on the clock as Milne scored six of Ramapo's points. Johnson hit a big three for Rutgers that started a 6-2 run before Haspel hit a jumper for Ramapo, 57-50 with 1:27 on the clock. The Roadrunners were forced to foul down the stretch as the Scarlet Raiders extended their lead to 12, 67-55.
Johnson led both team as she posted 27 points as she went 10-15 from the field and 3-5 from behind the three point line. She also recorded a team high seven steals. Nieves and Jasmine Daniels each recorded eight points. The Scarlet Raiders shot 69% (16-23) from the foul line and 47% (24-51) from the floor.
For the Roadrunners, Ryan tallied 12 points as she was 3-6 from behind the three point line while Milne went 3-6 from the field and 5-6 from the charity stripe for 11 points. She also grabbed five rebounds. Jerkovich added nine points, five assists and two steals while Howes added eight points. Ramapo shot 38% (19-49) and 68% (11-16) from the foul line in the game.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they travel to NJAC rival Richard Stockton at 3:00 PM.
