HASSAN SINKS 22 IN 70-62 WIN OVER RUTGERS NEWARK

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team played host to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark tonight at the Bradley Center where they earned a 70-62 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up. With the victory, which came behind 22 points from Ahmad Hassan, the Roadrunners improve to 18-4 overall, 9-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers Newark falls to 16-7 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Hassan shot 7-15 from the field as his team went 25-61 (41%) in the eight point conference win. LaQuan Peterkin pulled down a team high 11 rebounds and Elgin Brown chipped in 13 points while Anthony LoRusso dished five assists in the win. The Scarlet Raiders shot 22-55 (40%) form the field while Hussein Abdelmaksoud led the way hitting 12-16 from the field, including 5-8 from the free throw line sinking a team high 29 points. Abdelmaksoud grabbed 18 rebounds and Al'Don Muhammad dished out a team high five assists.

Behind 20 points and 13 rebounds from Abdelmaksoud, the Scarlet Raiders opened to a 31-25 halftime lead. Abdelmaksoud sunk 10 of the team's 14 first half field goals hitting 10-12 from the floor. Rutgers Newark sank 14-34 (41%) shooting ahead of the Roadrunners who went 11-29 (38%) from the field. Ramapo opened the game on top, 2-0, and 4-2, before quickly falling behind as the Scarlet Raiders went on a 7-0 run with 10:23 to go in the half to take a 22-15 lead. The run was sparked by Abdelmaksoud and capped off with a three-pointer from Greg Moore. The team's biggest lead came with 3:11 to play when a three-point basket from Jeremiah Rivers, off a steal by Moore, put Rutgers Newark up 27-18. Ramapo closed the gap to six with a three-pointer from Jairo Cruz before a basket from Anthony Hines put Ramapo within four points with just 1:58 to play. Rutgers Newark sunk back-to-back baskets to again lead by eight before a jump shot from Hines at the buzzer closed the gap to 31-25 heading into the locker room. All Roadrunners were held to single digit points with Peterkin and Hines on top with six points each.

Moore hit a three-point basket three minutes into the second half to put Rutgers Newark up, 40-30, before a jumper from Elgin Brown, a free throw from Peterkin, and five points from Hassan cut the gap to 40-38 forcing a Scarlet Raider timeout with 14:46 on the clock. Ramapo tied the game when a technical foul on the Scarlet Raider head coach after a foul was called, put Hassan on the line. Hassan hit two of his four shots. After the game's sixth tie, which came at 11:55, 45-45, the Roadrunners strung together 13 points to Rutgers Newark's six to take a seven point, 58-51 lead with a jumper from Demetrius Boards with just over six minutes to play. The closest the Scarlet Raiders would come was within three points, first at 3:16 with free throws from Rivers, and again when Noah McCoy hit a two point basket at 2:26 to close the gap, 61-58. Ramapo played out the final minutes pushing to a 70-62 victory. Hassan sunk 18 of his 22 points in the final half of play as the team went 14-32 (44%) from the field. Brown added 13 points. Abdelmaksoud netted nine second half points and his team went 8-21 (38%) from the field.
