Little Falls, NJ (5/10/07) – Sophomore righthander Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) tossed a five hitter while freshman second baseman Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) drove in a pair of runs as fifth-seeded Gettysburg College won the first game of the 2007 NCAA Division III Montclair, NJ Regional with a 4-1 victory over fourth-seeded Ramapo at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday.
The Bullets (25-13), making just their second appearance in the NCAA Championship, move into the next round and will face top-seeded Moravian (32-5) in Game 4 of the tournament at 4:00 pm on Thursday. The winner of that game would get a bye into Saturday's action. Ramapo, which is making is sixth trip to the NCAAs, fell to 30-9 and will face the loser of the Montclair State/Manhattanville game on Friday at 10:00 am in the first elimination contest of the tournament.
Rubino improved to 19-6 as she did not walk a batter and fanned eight, raising her school single-season total to 185. Senior righthander
Marissa Marino (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) took the loss (12-4) as she allowed four runs and six hits in three innings. Marino struck out one and walked three.
After a scorless first inning, the Bullets put a run on the board in the second as Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) singled and moved to second on a sacrifice. Iacobucci collected an infield single to put runners on the corners, but Marino fanned the next hitter for the second out. Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) then delivered an RBI single to left for the first run.
Gettysburg would extend the lead the following inning with three more runs. With one out, Erin Ober (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) walked and Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) singled to right field. Miller would move up to third on a fly out and Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, PA./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) drew a bases on balls to load the bases. Iacobucci then lined a single to left center scoring two as the Bullets led 3-0. Kara Kempski (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) added and RBI single as Gettysburg built its four-run cushion.
Rubino retired the first 14 Roadrunners she faced before allowing a single to
Leah Mondadori (Rutherford, NJ/Emerson) with two outs in the fifth. Ramapo would get on the board in the sixth
Katie Donnelly (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian) tripled to left field and
Lauren Cascino (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) singled to drive in the first Ramapo run.
Beth Choma (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) followed with another single however Rubino was able to get the next three hitters to end the threat.
Yannotta and Lacobucci each finished 2-for-3 for Gettysburg, which outhit Ramapo, 8-5 in the contest.
