Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team swept a NJAC doubleheader from Kean University today, 3-2 and 8-6 in nine innings. Ramapo improves to 28-6 on the season and 15-3 in NJAC action while Kean falls to 21-13 overall and 8-10 in the conference. Ramapo is awarded the second seed in the 2007 NJAC Tournament which starts Tuesday, May 1st on campus sites. It will then move to Montclair State University with all six teams in action on May 4.
Game 1: Kean University got on the board in the top of the 4th inning when Vicky Lanza ripped a solo homerun over the left field wall to put the Cougars up 1-0.
Ramapo tied the game in the 5th inning as junior
Lauren Cascino (New Windsor, NY) and senior
Beth Choma (East Brunswick, NJ) ripped back to back singles before sophomore
Kelly Schriber (Montclair, NJ) ripped a double to centerfield to plate Cascino.
The Cougars scored a run in the top of the 7th inning as pinch hitter Allison Thialbault was hit by a pitch and stole second before Allison Lizzi singled to put runners on first and third. Johanna Hedler reached on a fielder's choice to plate Thialbault to put the Cougars in front, 2-1.
The Roadrunners came back to win the game in the bottom half of the seventh to pick up their 27th victory of the season. Choma and sophomore
Marilee Farmer (Toms River, NJ) ripped singles to lead off the inning and advanced a base on a pass ball. Choma then scored on a pass ball to tie the game at 2-2. Rookie pinch runner
Jamie Chalkley (West Milford, NJ) was placed on thirdbase for Farmer and with two outs senior
Gemma Chalkley (West Milford, NJ) hit a pop fly to short centerfield that was misplayed by the Kean defense allowing the Roadrunners to score the winning run, 3-2.
Junior pitcher
Katie Norton (Livingston, NJ) picked up her 13th victory of the season, striking out five and allowing only six hits.
Choma was 2-4 with an RBI and run scored while Farmer was 2-3 with a walk and rookie
Katie Donnelly (North Haledon, NJ) was 2-4 in the game.
Game 2: Ramapo got on the board in the second inning as Choma ripped her 5th homerun of the season, scoring was Cascino who reached on a single to left field.
The Roadrunners score two more in the 3rd inning on a bases loaded infield single by Casicno, senior
Leah Mondadori (Rutherford, NJ) and sophomore
Amanda Sansevere (Hazlet, NJ) each scored on the play.
Kean picked up two runs in the 4th inning when MaryElise Gierke ripped a two out two run homerun to leftfield scoring Sara Steinman who walked to get on base.
Farmer ripped a single to leftfield and scored on a fielder's choice by Mondadori in the 5th inning to extend Ramapo's lead to 5-2.
The Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the 6th as Katie Hicks lead off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Kara Schults. Vicky Lanza then grounded out to the shortstop allowing Hicks to score.
Kean came back to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th inning as Katy McManus tripled to center and Hedler walked before McManus scored on a wild pitch. Hicks then doubled home Hedler to plate the tying run and force extra innings.
In the 9th inning Ramapo senior
Ginny O'Brien (Emerson, NJ) was placed on second base for the international tie-breaker rule. Donnelly sacrificed her to third before Cascino ripped a single down the right field line to pick up the RBI. Choma then ripped a double to right field to put runners at second and third before pinch hitter
Jen Vitorino (Old Bridge, NJ) singled up the middle to give Ramapo a 8-5 lead.
Kean scored one more in the bottom of the 9th but the Ramapo defense was able to get the final three outs of the game to seal the victory.
Senior pitcher
Marissa Marino (Wayne, NJ) earned a no-decision, pitching 6.1 innings with one strikeout. Norton came into the game in the 7th inning and pitched the final 2.1 innings to pick up her second victory on the day.
Cascino was 3-5 with two runs scored and three RBI while Choma was 2-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Roadrunners will host #5 Richard Stockton College in the opening round of the 2007 NJAC Softball Championships on May 1st; game time is slated for 4:00 PM.
