Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team spilt a NJAC double header match-up today at the Athletic Center in Mahwah, 1-0 and 3-2 with the Red Hawks of Montclair State University. Ramapo stands at 17-5 overall and 6-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Red Hawks remain in first place in the conference at 7-1, 23-3 overall.
Game 1: Junior pitcher Carolyn McCrea (Wharton, NJ) of Montclair State pitched a perfect game until the 5th inning when sophomore
Marilee Farmer (Toms River, NJ) ripped a double to left field to lead off.
Kendall Patton (Hammonton, NJ) pitch ran for Farmer and was driven in on a fielder's choice by senior
Leah Mondadori (Rutherford, NJ) to grab a one run edge over the Red Hawks. The Roadrunners held MSU in the final two innings to record the victory, Montclair's first NJAC loss of the season.
The Red Hawks had one final attempt at tying the game in the 7th with runners on second and third and two outs. Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ) ripped a double to center field and Jackie Ferranti (Bergenfield, NJ) followed with a single and advanced on the throw before Maureen Shockley (Magnolia, NJ) hit a long fly ball to right field. Farmer made the final out sealing the win for Ramapo.
McCrea pitched a two-hitter with Farmer and sophomore
Kelly Schriber (Montclair, NJ) the only Roadrunners making contact. McCrea falls to 15-2 on the year while sophomore
Katie Norton (Livingston, NJ) earned the win improving to 8-2 letting up five hits with no runs while striking out six.
Game 2: The Red Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of 1st inning after Ferranti drove a double to left field to lead off and later came home on a ground out to second by Jennifer Jimenez (Linden, NJ).
Ramapo got on the score board in the top of the 5th with two runs on two Montclair errors. With one out, Mondadori hit a single up the middle and
Amanda Sansevere (West Keansburg, NJ) reached on an error before coming home on a
Gemma Chalkley (West Milford, NJ) single and a second error respectively.
The Red Hawks answered back in the bottom of the inning tying the game at two runs apiece off a single by Ferranti which scored Durkin who ripped a double up the middle with two outs to get on base. In the final inning of play, Cheryl Bodak (South River, NJ) pitch hit for Whitney Driver (Montville, NJ) and hit a walk off homerun run defeating the Roadrunners, 3-2 in the second match-up of the double header.
Ferranti went 2-3 with one run and one RBI while Jimenez hit 1-3 with one RBI in the win. Durkin posted one hit on two at bats with one run. Ramapo's Mondadori and Sansevere hit 1-3 with one run each in the loss.
Senior pitcher
Marissa Marino (Wayne, NJ) falls to 8-2 on the year striking out five and walking none, letting up six hits while McCrea earns the win improving to 16-2 letting up six hits and striking out three.
Both teams return to action on Thursday, April 12 when Ramapo travels to St. Joe's at 3:00 PM and the Red Hawks visit the College of Staten Island at 3:00 PM.
