Ramapo 64, Rutgers-Newark 62 (OT)

NEWARK, NJ (February 7, 2007) – Senior guard Kelly Bartz (Madison, NJ/Madison HS) heaved in a 32-foot desperation shot from the right side at the overtime buzzer to lift Ramapo to a thrilling 64-62 upset of Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game in The Golden Dome.

Bartz, who hit three of five 3-point attempts for nine points and added a game-high six assists, took a defensive rebound feed from sophomore forward Tiffany China (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) with three seconds left on the clock, dribbled two steps beyond halfcourt near the right sideline, and lofted a one-handed toss that banged hard off the backboard directly into the basket as the Ramapo bench erupted.

It was the first NJAC win of the season for the Roadrunners (6-16, NJAC 1-9) and a stunning set back for Rutgers-Newark (15-7, NJAC 8-3) which entered the game in a tie for first place in the NJAC North Division with William Paterson.

Senior forward Keona Palmer (Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Ramapo while freshman guard Stephanie Cannizzaro (Pequannock, NJ/Pequannock) chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.

China, who hauled down eight rebounds, and sophomore guard Lauren Moschel (Fair Lawn, NJ/St. Mary) scored seven points apiece for Ramapo.

Sophomore guard Bimpe Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) paced Rutgers-Newark with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals while junior guard Nerlande Nicolas (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) added 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Junior guard Sabrina Sanchez (Keasbey, NJ/Woodbridge), who finished with 10 points, hit a driving layup with 15 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime period. The Roadrunners almost ended things in the closing seconds, but Moschel's layup after driving the right side of the lane fell off the rim at the buzzer.

A layup by China with 4:45 remaining in regulation boosted the Roadrunners into a 53-44 lead, but Nicolas capped a 12-4 Raider run with a 2-point jumper and a shot from beyond the arc to whittle the Ramapo lead to 57-56 with 1:40 left. A China free throw made it 58-56 with 25 ticks left, setting the stage for Sanchez's drive.

Cannizzaro had 10 points the in a see-saw opening half which ended with the Raiders ahead 33-28. After a free throw by Palmer gave the Roadrunners a 13-12 lead, Rutgers-Newark answered with a 10- run over a 2-minute span. Back-to-back 3-point jumpers by sophomore guard Youngor Kehleay (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) and junior forward Toni Roselli (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary's) were chased by a follow basket and a fastbreak layup by Bimpe Fageyinbo to make it 22-13 with 9:40 left in the period. But Cannizzaro had four points, including a game-tying free throw, as Ramapo bounced back with a 9-0 run to knot the score at 22-22 with 5:24 left. Junior forward Eni Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) netted a pair of inside jumpers to ignite an 8-2 Raider rally which gave Rutgers-Newark the lead for good at 30-24.
