NEWARK, NJ (September 23, 2006) – Junior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights HS) made 10 saves to up her Rutgers-Newark record to 13 shutouts for her career as the Scarlet Raiders blanked Ramapo, 2-0, on Alumni Field in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer match.
The visiting Roadrunners (4-3-1, NJAC 1-1-0) took 22 shots, including 11 on goal, compared to Scarlet Raider totals of six shots and four shots on goal, but Hastings made several brilliant stops to post her fourth shutout in eight matches this season.
Sophomore forward Erin Marshall (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had a hand in both goals, curling a corner kick into the front of the goal for junior midfielder Alison Phillips (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) to head in the game-winner in the 10th minute. It was Phillips' fourth goal of the season and her second game-winning tally. Marshall took a chip feed in the left side of the box with just 5:13 to go from freshman midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and punched a goal into the upper left side of the goal for an insurance score.
Ramapo could not get a break, missing several point-blank chances and getting thwarted by Hastings on other tries. Junior midfielder
Chrissy Giordano (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) put four of her five shots on goal to lead the ill-fated Roadrunner assault while sophomore midfielder
Shana Egan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) had three shots on goal in five tries.
Rutgers-Newark (4-4-0, NJAC 1-2-0) visits Montclair State on Wednesday at 4 o'clock while Ramapo hosts William Paterson at 4:30 as both squads continue their NJAC schedules.
