Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team faced the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers Camden today at the Athletic Center in Mahwah in a NJAC match-up. The Scarlet Raptors who entered the double-header undefeated in the conference, walked away from Mahwah posting a 2-1 win in game one and a 5-4 come-from-behind victory in game two to improve to 26-4 overall, 8-0 in the conference. Ramapo falls to 19-8 overall, 5-5 in the conference.
Game 1: The Roadrunners fell short, 1-2 in the first of the double-header behind Valeri Bohn (Delran, NJ) and Autumn Millett (Richwood, NJ) who each touched home plate in the 1st and 5th innings respectively. Bohn pinch ran for Marissa VanCleef (Hillsborough, NJ) who was hit by a pitch to start the game, and later came home when sophomore Kathleen Dreitlein (Berkeley Heights, NJ) ripped a double to center field with one out in the 1st. Lisa Rizzo (Dumont, NJ) walked to lead off the inning and
Kendall Patton (Hammonton, NJ) pinch ran for Rizzo crossing the plate on a Rutgers error. Patton reached second base on a second Rutgers Camden error in the inning. With bases loaded in the top of the 5th, sophomore pitcher
Katie Norton (Livingston, NJ) brushed the elbow of Megan Farrell (Medford, NJ) bringing home Millett who walked earlier in the inning to get on base. The Roadrunners were unable to fight back falling 1-2 in Mahwah.
The Scarlet Raptors were led by Dreitlein who went 2-3 and VanCleef who posted one hit on three at bats. Bohn scored the Raptors first run and Millet went 0-2 crossing the plate for the team's winning run. Senior pitcher Michelle Schlichtig (Barrington, NJ) earns the win in seven complete innings improving to 12-2 with nine strike outs and two walks while Ramapo's Norton falls to 5-2 pitching seven, striking out four and walking one. Leah Mondadori (Emerson, NJ), (1-3).
Game 2: The Roadrunners jumped on top early in game two in the 2nd inning when
Michele Rossi (Emerson, NJ) ripped a homerun over the right field wall with
Beth Choma (East Beunswick, NJ) on first base to take a 2-0 lead. Choma drove a single to right with one out in the inning to get on base. Camden closed the gap in the bottom of the inning when junior pitcher
Marissa Marino (Wayne, NJ) walked in Jayme Feriod (Glassboro, NJ), 2-1. Ramapo posted a two-run 6th inning with runs from Rossi and Patton to grab a 4-1 lead before Rutgers Camden recorded four runs on four hits in the bottom of the 6th to take the game, 5-4 in Mahwah. Mandi Moore (Haddonfield, NJ) walked to lead off, VanCleef singled to right field, Millett flied out to right, and Schlichtig singled to center to load the bases for Dreitlein who ripped a double to left scoring two. Farrell hit a sac fly and Mo Baney (Deptford, NJ) ripped a single of her own scoring what turned out to be the game winner.
Therese Taraschi (Haddonfield, NJ) took over pitching duties and recorded the win in 1/3 inning with zeros across the board while Schlichtig wrapped up the day on the mound recording her 3rd save of the year. Ramapo's Marino took the loss in 5 1/3 innings striking out two and walking three. Marino falls to 6-4 while Taraschi improves to 5-0.
Camden was led by Dreitlein who went 3-4 with one run and two RBI while Baney hit 3-4 with one RBI. VanCleef posted one hit on three at bats with one run and Feriod grabbed a run of her own. For the Roadrunners, Choma went 1-3 with one run and Rossi posted one hit on two at bats with two runs and two RBI in the loss.
The Roadrunners will host William Paterson on Tuesday, April 18th at 3:00 PM.
