Mahwah , NJ : The Ramapo College softball team swept Kean University today in Mahwah, 6-5 in 8 innings and 10-5 in 9 innings. With the sweep The Roadrunners improve to 26-10 overall and 8-4 in the NJAC, while The Cougars fall to 15-20 overall and 4-10 in the NJAC.
Game 1: The Roadrunners held a steady lead scoring three runs in the first five innings before the Cougars of Kean University stepped it up in the top of the 6th. Junior Michelle Baiera (East Brunswick, NJ ) ripped a grand slam over the left field wall with two outs in the inning giving the Cougars a one run, 4-3, edge. Baiera scored Johanna Hedler (South Plainfield, NJ ) who reached on an error with one out in the inning to get on base and senior Jessica Rios (Hamilton, NJ ) who scored after singling to left. Leigh Greenberg (Carteret, NJ ) also came home after loading the bases with a walk. Ramapo tied the game in the bottom of the inning when rookie AMANDA JONES (Rutherford, NJ ) ripped a double to center to lead off, and later scored on a sac fly to left field by sophomore LEAH MONDADORI (Rutherford, NJ ).
Tied at four runs apiece, the Cougars jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the top of the 8th when Rios hit a sac bunt moving over Aleksandrich who was placed on second in the extra inning international tiebreaking game. Aleksandrich came home on a sac fly to center by Greenberg. Ramapo escaped the remaining of the inning behind the Cougars, 5-4.
Rookie KENDALL PATTON (Hammonton, NJ ) was placed on second and sophomore BETH CHOMA (East Brunswick, NJ ) laid down a bunt which drew a throwing error scoring PATTON and tying the game, 5-5. Sophomore MICHELE ROSSI (Emerson, NJ ) drove in JONES, the winning run, with a single to the short stop. Ramapo dropped the Cougars, 6-5 in game one.
Junior ERICA MOORE (Hazlet, NJ) led the way recording two hits on three at bats with two runs in the win while JONES went 1-3 with two runs and ANDREA PASTIGLIONE (Southern California, CA) went 2-4 with one RBI. ROSSI posted two hits on five at bats with one RBI and junior LISA RIZZO (Dumont, NJ ) and CHOMA each hit 1-4 with one RBI each. For the Cougars, Baiera went 3-4 including a grand slam. Baiera posted one run and two RBI while Rios and Hedler hit 1-2 with one run and 1-4 with one run respectively.
Rookie pitcher HEATHER CAMB (Totowa, NJ ) earns the win improving to 7-3 pitching 1/3 inning while Kristin Lawrence (Salem, NJ ) records the loss pitching 7 2/3 innings. Lawrence let up 12 hits with six runs while striking out none in the loss.
Game 2: The Roadrunners scored four runs in the top of the 4th when rookie LAUREN CASCINO (New Windsor, NY) reached base by a Cougar error and later scored when CHOMA ripped a single to left. The bases were loaded when GINNY O'BRIEN (Emerson, NJ ) walked to push home their second run. MONDADORI then beat out an infield hit to the shortstop scoring CHOMA. ROSSI then singled to left scoring JONES, bring the score to 4-0. The Cougars scored one in the bottom half of the inning when Greenberg reached base on a single to right center and later scored on a groundout by Kara Shults (Clifton, NJ ). Kean then scored three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th as Greenberg singled home Hedler. Duska then singled home Greenberg and Lanza doubled to centerfield scoring Baiera who reached on a fielder's choice, tying the game at 4 a piece.
The game went into extra innings, and in the top of the 9th the Roadrunners scored six runs on four hits. O'BRIEN was placed on second for the international tie-breaker rule. She was advanced to third when MONDADORI hit a fielder's choice. ROSSI then singled past second base to score O'BRIEN. MOORE then ripped a single to left field scoring MONDADORI and ROSSI scored on the throw home. RIZZO then hit a single up the middle to score MOORE. JONES then walked with the bases loaded, which scored CASCINO who got on base on a walk. MONDADORI then hit a bunt single with the bases loaded to score PASTIGLIONE who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the 9th as Aleksandrich was placed on second and later scored when Baiera grouned out. PASTIGLIONE picked up the win in relief, bringing her record to 7-3. She struck out two giving up only one hit and one run scored in four innings of work.
ROSSI was two for six with one run scored and two RBI's and MOORE went two for five with one run scored and one RBI. RIZZO was two for four with one run scored and one RBI.
For the Cougars Kristen Hennings (Jackson, NJ ) took the loss pitching a complete game, firing six strikeouts. Greenberg was four for five at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI while Duska was 2 for four with one run scored.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow as they face NJAC rival William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ at 3:00PM.
