Mahwah , NJ : The Ramapo College women's basketball team played host to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark tonight at the Bradley Center in Mahwah posting a 63-59 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up. The Roadrunners now stand at 10-12 overall while improving to 4-9 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers Newark falls to 15-7 overall, 7-6 in the conference.
The Scarlet Raiders shot 39% (9-23) from the field over Ramapo's 33% (8-24) in the first twenty minutes of the game taking a 31-27 halftime lead. The lead changed nine times with Rutgers Newark leading by as many as five and Ramapo spreading their lead to three. Senior guard JANINE CAPPADONE (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) and junior guard VANESSA VARGAS (Union City, NJ) shot a combined 4-7 from the three-point arc while Rutgers Newark's rookie guard Nerlande Nicolas (Maplewood, NJ) and junior center Christyal Anderson (Newark, NJ) shot a combined 4-10 from behind the arc.
In the second half of play, Ramapo fought back from a seven point deficit with 5:56 left in the game earning a four point victory. CAPPADONA netted a three at 1:39 to take a two point lead and a jumper at 00:51 to grab a four point edge. Ramapo held the lead for the final 51 seconds taking home the victory in Mahwah.
CAPPADONA led Ramapo with 22 points shooting 7-15 from the field and 4-8 from the arc. VARGAS followed with 16 points and sophomore KEONA PALMER (Port Reading, NJ) recorded ten of her own. Rookie center ALISON BELLER (Morris Plains, NJ) led the way with ten boards. Ramapo shot 37% for the game behind Rutgers Newark's 44%.
For the Scarlet Raiders, Nicolas led the team with 18 points shooting 7-17 from the field while Anderson finished with 12 points and led with eight boards. Sabrina Sanchez (Keasbey, NJ ) grabbed a team-high three steals and Eni Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, NJ) dished out a team-high five assists in the loss.
The Roadrunners will travel to Rowan University on Saturday, February 12th for a 1:00 PM start while Rutgers Newark will host The College of New Jersey at 1:00 PM.
