Softball MONTCLAIR DROPS ROWAN, 1-0 IN EXTRA INNINGS

2004 NJAC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

RUTGERS CAMDEN DEFEATS RAMAPO, 4-1

Mahwah , NJ : The 2004 New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Championship Tournament began today at the Athletic Center on the campus of Ramapo College . In game one, the #1 seeded Roadrunners of Ramapo College were defeated 4-1 by the #4 seeded Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers Camden, while the #3 seeded Red Hawks of Montclair State followed with a 1-0 victory over the #2 seeded Profs of Rowan University. Ramapo falls to 30-5, Rowan drops to 28-10 while Rutgers Camden and Montclair improve to 30-8 and 29-8 respectively.

Game 1: In the top of the 2nd, Rutgers Camden's Mo Baney (Depford , NJ ) crossed home plate on a single to left field by Ashley O'Brien (Phoenixville , PA ) taking a 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners. The Scarlet Raptors posted a second run in the 5th inning when Autumn Millett (Richwood , NJ ) walked to lead off and later scored on a Michelle Schlichtig (Barrington , NJ ) single to center. Rutgers Camden added insurance in the 6th and 7th with runs by Baney and Schlichtig dropping Ramapo, 4-1. Baney came home on a RBI single by O'Brien in the 6th and Schlichtig ripped a solo home run over the left field wall with two outs in the 7th. Ramapo posted their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 7th when sophomore Andrea Pastiglione (Southern California , CA) drove in junior Alicia Cruz (East Brunswick , NJ ) who walked with two outs.

Schlichtig batted 2-4 with one run and two RBI while O'Brien and junior Celeste Chinappi (Bellmawr , NJ ) went 2-3 with two RBI and 2-2 with two runs and one RBI respectively. Millett added one run in the victory.

For the Roadrunners, rookie Michele Rossi (Emerson , NJ ) hit 2-3 while Michelle Micklos (Tuxedo, NY) posted two hits on three at bats of her own. Pastiglione and Erica Moore (Hazlet , NJ ) went 1-4 in the loss.

Senior pitcher Jamie Anzaldi (Clifton , NJ ) pitched the complete game, striking out nine and walking two, falling to 16-3 for the year. Schlichtig earns the win in seven innings, striking out eight and walking two, improving to 18-5.

Game 2: The game remained scoreless until the top of the 8th when Montclair 's Diana Auteri (Lyndhurst , NJ ) hit a lead off double and Athanasia Totaro (Roseland , NJ ) followed with a double of her own taking a 1-0 lead over Rowan. Montclair held Rowan in the bottom of the inning earning the 1-0 victory.

Auteri hit 3-4 with one run while Totaro went 2-3 with one RBI. For the Profs, Crystal Barbour (Erial, NJ) posted the lone hit on three at bats.

Junior pitcher Sara Dickey (Skippack, PA) records the loss falling to 14-3, striking out three and walking two in eight innings pitched while senior pitcher Crystal Sweeney (Edison, NJ) earns the win improving to 16-5, striking out seven and walking two in the one hit complete game.

Ramapo will take on Rowan at 11:00 AM facing elimination, while Rutgers Camden takes on Montclair at 1:00 PM .
