This Week's Ask the AD Question...
Submitted by rcnjfan: April 20, 2011
Are there any discussions about how to get more fans at Ramapo games? There is no reason why the other sports teams should not be in attendance to support their fellow RCNJ athletes. Only a select few teams go to events.
The Athletic Department spends a lot of time and money promoting our sporting events on a daily basis. Generating more fan attendance is not something that will happen overnight. It will take us time to get where we would like to be and we continue to work hard to increase fan attendance.
Word of mouth is the best way to spread the word about events and the great student-athletes we have competing everyday for the College. Any help you can all give to positively spread the word would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the support you give to our student-athletes and our athletic programs!

Does Ramapo have any ice hockey teams or intramural hockey teams to play on?
At this time Ramapo does not have a varsity ice hockey team. We are however exploring the option of starting a club ice hockey team. I say exploring becuase a lot goes into starting a new program, whether varsity or club. We need to ensure that we can start a program that can substain budget cuts and serve our students in a productive manner.

Any chance that Ramapo may start a d3 mens lacrosse team?
At this time we could not start a men's lacrosse team for gender equity and budget restraint issues. As a NCAA Division III institution, there are rules and regulations we must follow to ensure that gender equallity is offered in our department. Adding a men's sport, as our department currently stands, is not a viable option. Also, with the state of the budget, adding any sports at this time would be close to impossible.
Thank you for your interest and support of Ramapo Athletics!

Is Ramapo looking into webcasting athletic events?
Webcasting our athletic events is something we are definitely interested in doing in the future. As with everything, there is a cost involved with broadcasting over the Internet. We are currently researching the costs and benefits to the department and our athletes and fans and hope to have a decision shortly.

A team is historically good. They continue to recruit and have top notch athlete's. All of a sudden, there is a coaching change, for whatever reason. The team then starts losing to a ton of games, and to teams with lesser players. Who would be to blame here?
Thanks for your question. There are circumstances that you are not aware of, nor am I at liberty to discuss. With that being said, I will have no more comments about the Men's Volleyball Program or any situation surrounding the program until the investigation process is completed. I am not a part of the investigation process.
Thanks again for your interest in Roadrunner Men's Volleyball!

A wise man once said that "goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement."
Please list two (2) short term goals, and two (2) long term goals, that you have set for Ramapo College Athletics.
Yes, you are right!
Short-Term Goals
1. Review Current Athletic Budget
2. Review Organizational Structure
Long-Term Goals
1. Review Department's Strategic Plan
2. Develop new fundraising plan
Since this area seems to interest you, please feel free to set up a meeting with me to discuss these goals.

Why did you leave a Division I school to come to a Division III school as a temporary replacement?
With the sudden and tragic death of Mr. Michael Ricciardi, who used to work for me during my tenure as the Director of Athletics here at Ramapo College, I was asked to come back and assist both the College and the Department of Athletics to work through this very difficult situation. With my strong feelings for both the College and this Department, I decided to come back and help out.

Why did you wait until late December to send this investigation "up the hill" when you were first notified of the "personnel issue" in the early part of the semester?
Thanks for your interest in the Men's Volleyball Program, as well as my role as the Director of Athletics. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to discuss the Athletic Department's personnel issues with you.
Thanks for your support of Ramapo Men's Volleyball!

Can we please re-instate our coaches so we can get the line-up in we need to get the job done?
I would like to thank you for your support for the Ramapo Men's Volleyball Program, and I appreciate both your comment and suggestion. I will not discuss personnel issues regarding any member of the Ramapo College Athletic Department, but I will tell you that I care about the Men's Volleyball Program!

What division is the Softball team?
Ramapo College is a Division III member of the NCAA and submits to the Division III philosophy, where the highest priority is on the overall educational experience of the student-athlete, as well as the successful completion of their academic careers. It also seeks to establish and maintain an environment in which a student’s athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience in which coaches, administrators, and support staff play a significant role as educators. We also seek to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and support staff.

So when is the football team coming back?
Due to financial constraints that both the college and the state of New Jersey are currently facing, I do not see football coming back in the near future. It is very costly and would probably cost around $20 million to restart the program and put the necessary infrastructure in place.
Also, why was it removed in the first place?
In 1992, due to college financial constraints, football was too expensive to maintain at that time. Thus, the college decided to keep other programs that were less costly.
