Box Score 2 Patchogue, NY: The Ramapo College baseball team moved to 9-5 overall with a non-conference sweep over Saint Joseph's University Long Island. The Roadrunners won game one 13-6 and game two 11-4. The Golden Eagles now stand at 7-7 overall.
Game #1: Ramapo 13, St. Joseph's Long Island 6
The score was tied at one before Ramapo scored eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first run crossed the plate when
Julian Caruso bounced into a fielder's choice to score
Braden Schappert, 2-1.
Jack Tallent earned an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which forced
James Zwolinski to score before Caruso scored on an infield error, 4-1.
Zach Barbash cleared the bases with a three RBI double to left field before Schappert belted a two-run home run for the 9-1 lead. The Golden Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the fifth before Ramapo added four more runs in the top of the seventh.
Derek Brand drove in Barbash with an RBI single before
Casey Chiola laced a double to center field which allowed Schappert to score, 11-2. Brand later scored on an RBI groundout from Caruso before
Julian Schultz singled home Chiola to extend the lead, 13-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Joe Thatcher connected on a three-RBI double to left-center field for St. Joseph's, 13-5. In the bottom of the ninth the Golden Eagles scored the final run of the game on an RBI double from Connor Bruce as Alex Johnston scored, 13-6.
John Hacker (2-1) struck out eight, walked two and surrendered four hits and two runs scored in six innings of work to earn the win on the mound for Ramapo. The Roadrunners pounded out 14 hits in the game as Schappert finished 3-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Tallent, Zwolinski and Chiola each collected two hits apiece while Barbash led the way with three RBI.
Game #2: Ramapo 11, Golden Eagles 4
In the top of the fifth with two outs,
Nick Pellegrino tripled to plate Tallent with the game's first run to take a 1-0 lead. Following a walk to
Zach Novakowski, Schappert laced a two-RBI double which allowed Pellegrino and Novakowski to score, 3-0.
Dan Maglio then collected an RBI double of his own to left-center field to plate Schappert for a 4-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, the Roadrunners scored seven more runs to extend their lead, 11-0. Ramapo recorded six RBI singles in the inning including a bases-loaded walk to Maglio. In the bottom of the seventh the Golden Eagles scored two runs with a sac fly from Paul McNally and an RBI groundout from John Margolies. In the bottom of the eighth, John Thatcher drove in two more runs for the team with a hard-hit single to right-center. The Roadrunners worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth as they completed the non-conference sweep, 11-4.
Michael Zalinkansas struck out a career high 14 in five innings of work while surrendering just three hits and four walks.
Greg Guzman worked the middle three innings on the mound recording four strikeouts and three walks. He surrendered four hits and four runs while
Hunter Sabbers worked a scoreless ninth facing the minimum three batters. Ramapo collected 16 hits as a team in the game while they were led by Schappert who finished 4-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Caruso and Tallent each collected three hits while Tallent scored two runs and collected one RBI.
Ramapo returns to action on Tuesday, March 24th when they take on the University of Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference game on Jeff Maund Field at 3:30 PM.
