Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team outlasted Stockton University in double overtime today at the Bradley Center on
Chuck McBreen Court, 97-95. The Roadrunners improve to 18-6 overall and 12-5 in the NJAC while the Ospreys move to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the league.
Ramapo started off the first half on a mini 6-0 run as
Anthony Corbo,
Peter Gorman and
Jordan Myers all scored layups. Back-to-back three-pointers for Stockton tied the game before Gorman sank his first of five three-pointers in the game. A layup and jumper for Stockton gave them a one-point lead before the two teams traded baskets before Gorman sank two more three-pointers giving Ramapo a 17-15 lead with 11:49 on the clock. Stockton sank a three of their own before Gorman went on a five-point run of his own. His three-pointer with 8:51 on the clock gave Rampao a 22-18 lead. With less than five minutes in the half, Myers converted on an and-one play which sparked a 9-0 run where Gorman scored the next six points for a seven-point lead, 35-28. Each team scored five points to round out the first half as Ramapo took a 40-33 lead into the locker room. In the second half, Ramapo held at least a ten-point lead the majority of the first 11 minutes before a pair of free throws from Corbo put them up, 59-44. An 8-0 run from Stockton shrunk the lead to just seven before back-to-back baskets from
Justin Bladen stretched the lead back to 11 with 7:07 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets before a three-pointer from Logan McKee cut the Ramapo lead to just five with less than five minutes remaining. Gorman sank a pair of free throws and Bladen scored a fast-break three-pointer for a ten-point lead with 4:36 on the clock. Stockton went on an 18-8 run to end the second half. They tied the game with a three-pointer out of the hands of EJ Mathews-Spratley to send the game into overtime, 80-80.
Each team scored eight points in the first overtime period but none were as clutch as a pair of free throws from Corbo. Corbo was fouled with six seconds remaining to send him to the line down two where he would convert both and tie the game at 88. Stockton would get a shot off as time expired but it would not find the bottom of the net as the game would go into double overtime. Corbo once again converted at the line on an and-one play to start the second overtime period, 91-88. The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before Stockton sank a three-pointer from Logan with 2:11 remaining to tie the game at 95. Following a Stockton timeout, Ramapo would get a key bucket from Myers for the two-point lead with 1:50 remaining. The Roadrunners would hold on in the final moments of the game for the key NJAC victory on senior day, 97-95.
The Roadrunners were led by Gorman who played all 50 minutes of the game as he scored a new career high 39 points. He finished 12-22 from the field, 5-10 from the three-point line and perfect from the free throw line, 10-10. Myers posted a double double with 18 points and ten rebounds while Bladen collected 16 points. Corbo added a team high 12 rebounds along with nine points as he finished 5-5 from the free throw line.
Shane Rooney contributed with nine points, six rebounds and five assists. Ramapo posted 40 points in the paint, 32 fast-break points and 11 off turnovers. The Roadrunners shot 45% (32-71) from the floor, 35% (7-20) from the field and 83% (26-31) from the free throw line.
Stockton's Matthews-Spratley led the team with 27 points while McKee added 22 and Eriq Campbell tallied 20. Tayvon Gaither posted a team high seven rebounds and added six points. The team shot 37% (34-92) from the field, 31% (12-38) from the three-point line and 75% (15-20) from the free throw line.
Ramapo wraps up regular season action on Wednesday, February 19th when they travel to William Paterson University for a NJAC game at 7:30 PM.
