Wayne, NJ: The #3 William Paterson University field hockey team defeated #4 Ramapo College tonight 2-1 to win the 2020-2021 NJAC Field Hockey Championship. The Pioneers wrap up the season 3-2 overall while the Roadrunners stand at 0-2 on the year.
It was Ramapo who got on the board first in the first half when
Katie Yarussi scored her first goal of the season for a quick 1-0 lead. The goal came in the 9th minute of action (8:31) off a pass from
Victoria Docherty.
WPU tied the game in the second quarter when Catie Wilson tallied her second goal of the season off a pass from Abigail Viola (23:46). Neither team found the back of the net in the third quarter as the score remain tied 1-1 heading into the final 15 minutes of action. Viola scored the eventual game-winner (45:38) and Alicia Mitchell recorded the assist for a 2-1 lead.
The Roadrunners had opportunities to tie the game in the fourth but the WPU defense kept them from tying the game. With the victory, the Pioneers earned their fourth NJAC title in program history. Emily Hoagland tallied three saves in the game for WPU. The Pioneers held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots including 6-5 in shots on goal in the game.
Ramapo made their first appearance in the NJAC Tournament and their first appearance in the championship game.
Samantha Stolker recorded four saves in the game for the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners recorded 12 penalty corners to WPU's nine.
