Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark University tonight at the Bradley Center, 71-64. The Roadrunners improve to 6-2 overall, 2-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 3-5 overall, 1-3 in the NJAC.
The Roadrunners were the first on the board five seconds into the game with a jumper from
Olivia Johnstone. Rutgers-Newark answered back putting two of their own on the board. At 7:42, Syncere Lambert would start a mini 7-0 run for the Scarlet Raiders capped off by a layup from Elisha India Cross, 9-4. The Roadrunners would go on to dominate the last 3:11 of play in the quarter going on a 13-0 run, with
Jada Thompson and Jackie Venticelli netting four points each, 19-11. The two teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter with a free throw at 1:28 from
Bridget Cahill stretching the lead to 10 for the Roadrunners. A layup from Cross with 0:22 left would be the final basket of the half sending Rutgers-Newark into the locker room down by eight, 23-31. Ramapo came out of the locker room to go on a 10-0 run capped off by a jump shot from
Shannon Burns stretching the lead to 18. The Scarlet Raiders came within eight with 2:28 left in the third quarter with a layup from Samiyah Horton before Ramapo would tack on four more. Ebony Odom Barnes would get a jump shot in with 0:21 left ending the quarter 38-48. A pair of free throws from Barnes closed the gap to five for Rutgers-Newark, 45-50. The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the half with the Roadrunners walking away with the 71-64 victory.
For the Roadrunners
Alie Wickersheim recorded a double double with 12 points and a team high of 16 rebounds. Ventricelli netted 14 points, a team high, while Thompson and Johnstone each had 12. Ramapo shot 38% (25-66) from the field, 19% (3-16) from beyond the three-point line and 82% (18-22) from the free throw line.
Horton led the Scarlet Raiders with 26 points while Barnes recorded 22 of her own and eight rebounds. Rutgers Newark 43% (26-60) from the field, 12% (2-17) at the three-point line, and 59% (10-17) at the free-throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action Saturday, December 11th as they travel to Kean University for a 3pm NJAC match-up.
