Mahwah, NJ: The Rutgers-Newark University men's basketball team held onto a 57-48 road conference win over Ramapo College tonight at the Bradley Center. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners move to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the game and would hold off a Ramapo comeback in the second half to remain undefeated in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders took a 15 point lead, 35-20, into the locker room at halftime before the Roadrunners shrunk the lead in the second half. Rutgers-Newark led 41-25 with 15:22 on the clock before a 17-2 run by the Roadrunners cut the lead to just one, 42-43 with under four minutes to play in the game. Following a Scarlet Raider timeout, they went on a 9-2 run to push their lead back to eight, 52-44 with 1:15 on the clock. Rutgers-Newark would finish the game on a 5-2 run to hold onto the victory.
The Scarlet Raiders had four players score in double figures tonight as they were led by BJ Honis who posted 18 points and seven rebounds. Quincy Rutherford added 12 points, four assists while Abe Kromah and Jamir Patterson each contributed with ten points each. The Rutgers-Newark defense forced 21 Ramapo turnovers that led to 14 points for the Scarlet Raiders. The team shot 39% (20-51) from the field, 41% (8-19) from the three-point line and 90% (9-10) from the free throw line.
For the Roadrunners,
Shane Rooney posted a double double with ten points and ten rebounds while
Justin Bladen also collected ten points in the game.
Jordan Myers added seven points and
Mark Howell contributed with six of his own. The team shot 41% (19-46) from the field, 37% (3-8) from the three-point line and 46% (7-15) from the free throw line. The Roadrunners forced 15 Rutgers-Newark turnovers leading to 11 points for Ramapo.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, December 11th when they travel to Kean University for a NJAC game at 1pm.
