Mahwah, NJ: The William Paterson University women's basketball team used a last second shot from Brianna Brooks to slip past Ramapo College tonight at the Bradley Center 64-61. The Pioneers move to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners suffer their first loss of the season and move to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
WPU led down the stretch of the first and most of the second quarter before Ramapo's
Shannon Burns and
Olivia Johnstone sank back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 26-26 heading into the locker room at halftime. Johnstone nailed another three-pointer to open the third quarter to take a 29-26 lead before Justina Cabezas scored six straight points for WPU to take a 32-31 lead. With the game tied for the fifth time, 37-37, with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter,
Alison Ahern started a 6-0 run for the Roadrunners capped off with a three-pointer from
Jada Thompson just before the quarter ended for a 43-37 lead.
Ramapo took their first double digit lead in the fourth quarter, 48-37 as Thompson nailed another three-pointer. The two teams traded baskets before WPU went on an 8-0 run with just over five minutes remaining in the game to shrink the Roadrunner lead to two, 56-58 with less than two minutes on the clock.
Alie Wickersheim scored a jumper to put Ramapo back up by four, 60-56. With 1:21 left in the fourth quarter, Brianna Smith sank a three-pointer to come within one of the lead, 59-61 before
Olivia Johnstone converted a pair of free throws to take a three point lead with 41 seconds on the clock. Yakira Rosa tied the game with a big three-pointer for WPU before the Pioneers got the ball back following a Ramapo turnover. Victoria Palladino dished Brooks a pass with less than a second on the clock to score the game-winning basket and earn the NJAC road victory.
Three Roadrunners scored in double figures in the game while they were led by Johnstone who posted 22 points and finished with four three-pointers. Burns converted on three made three-pointers and recorded 13 points, five rebounds while Thompson posted ten points, nine rebounds and four assists. Wickersheim collected a team high 11 rebounds while she contributed with nine points. The Ramapo defense forced 16 WPU turnovers which led to 14 points for the Roadrunners. The team shot 35% (23-65) from the field, 37% (9-24) from the three-point line and 43% (7-16) from the free throw line.
Cabezas led WPU with 22 points as she finished 10-16 from the field while Brooks added 16 points including 8-12 from the free throw line. Rosa tallied nine points and six rebounds while Sierra Strong posted a team high eight rebounds and six points. The team shot 40% (25-62) from the field, 22% (2-9) from the three-point line and 57% (12-21) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, December 1st when they travel to Montclair State University for a NJAC conference game at 6pm.
