Arlington, VA: The Marymount University men's basketball team defeated Ramapo College, 76-57, today in the opening game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament. The Saints improve to 1-2 overall while the Roadrunners now stand at 1-2 on the year.
Ramapo came out and scored the first two baskets of the game as
Jordan Myers and
Shane Rooney scored back-to-back layups for a 4-0 lead. Montell Cooper scored a basket for Marymount which cut the lead in half before Xavier Reaves tied it with a pair of free throws, 4-4. Rooney sank back-to-back layups to regain a four-point lead before a three-pointer from Marcus Stubbs cut the lead to just one. A jumper from
Mark Howell gave Ramapo a three-point lead before a three-pointer from Reaves started a 6-0 run which gave them a 13-10 lead with 12:16 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets until a three-pointer from Nick Rivas started a 9-0 run as Marymount took a ten point lead 26-16. Ramapo was able to cut the lead to six before the Saints stretched their lead to 14 with 1:27 left in the half. Ramapo scored a three-pointer by
Isaiah Hall while he converted a free throw and Marcus Stubbs tacked on a three-pointer for Marymount with four ticks left on the clock. The Saints took a 45-32 lead into halftime.
Marymount held a double-digit lead throughout the second half including their biggest lead with just under 1:30 left to play in the game, 76-55. Ramapo scored the final basket in the game, a layup from
Anthony Corbo.
Myers led Ramapo with 16 points while he added five rebounds. Rooney finished with 12 points and a team high nine rebound while
Mark Howell added seven points. Ramapo shot 47% (27-57) from the field, 33% (2-6) from the three-point line and 50% (1-2) from the free throw line.
The Saints had three players score in double figures in the non-conference win. Stubbs scored 16 points including 4-6 from the three-point line while Montell Cooper and Reaves each tallied 13 points. Reaves also pulled down a team high nine rebounds while Cooper collected a team high six assists. The team shot 50% (31-62) from the field, 32% (8-25) from the three-point line and 66% (6-9) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 21st when they take on Washington and Lee University in the consolation game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament. The game is set for 12pm.
