Camden, NJ: The Rutgers-Camden University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College 63-52 tonight in NJAC action. The Scarlet Raptors now stand at 7-5 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners move to 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The Scarlet Raptors opened the scoring in the first quarter with a bucket from Fatimah Williams before Ramapo went on a mini 5-0 run sparked by a three-pointer from
Samantha Rinaldi and a pair of free throws from
Stacey Porzl for a 5-2 lead. A 6-2 run from Rutgers gave them an 8-7 lead on a pair of free throws from Jalissa Pitts with 3:23 left on the clock. Each team added four points to the score in the final three minutes of the quarter as Rutgers led 12-11.
A 7-3 run to start the second quarter gave Ramapo an 18-15 lead capped off with a jumper from
Jessica Repasy. The Roadrunners went up five 22-17 when
Bridget Cahill sank a three-pointer with under 1:20 left on the clock before Jalissa Pitts converted a pair of free throws for Rutgers which started a 6-0 run to close out the half. The Scarlet Raptors took a 23-22 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter the Roadrunners would tie the game with a three-pointer from Rinaldi 25-25 before each team traded baskets once again tying the game 27-27. Rutgers went on a 6-0 run for a 33-27 lead before Ramapo cut the lead to 33-36 with a 6-2 run of their own. A free throw from Shane Holmes with 2:12 left in the quarter started a 4-0 run as the Scarlet Raptors closed out the quarter with a 39-33 lead. In the fourth quarter Rutgers continued their run with four straight points to take their first double digit lead 43-33. They would stretch their lead to 53-37 with 3:18 left to play in the game. Smedile would go on a 9-2 run of her own with three straight three-pointers as Ramapo cut the lead 46-55. Ramapo would cut the lead to six with just over one-minute left to play with a three-pointer from Smedile and free throw from Wickersheim. Williams and Tamara Johnson each sank a pair of free throws to close out the game with the 63-52 win.
Wickersheim pulled down a team high 14 rebounds while she contributed with eight points, two blocks and one steal. Smedile and Rinaldi each tallied a team high 12 points while
Bridget Cahill and Porzl also posted eight points each in the game. The team shot 38% (18-47) from the field, 40% (8-20) from the three-point line and 57% (8-14) from the free throw line.
Jalissa Pitts led both teams with 22 points and 13 rebounds while she finished 11-13 from the free throw line. Williams recorded 15 points and five rebounds while Kayla Newton and Holmes each collected nine points. The team shot 35% (17-48) from the floor, 18% (2-11) from the three-point line and 69% (27-39).
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, January 11th when they host the College of New Jersey at 3pm at the Bradley Center.
