Union, NJ: The #3 seeded Ramapo College Roadrunners faced off with the #6 seeded Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark today as they earned the 3-2 win to advance in the 2019 NJAC Baseball Championship Tournament. The Roadrunners will take on the #1 seeded Profs of Rowan University at 3:30pm tomorrow in Union. Ramapo improves to 24-14 overall on the year.
Greg Westhelle got the win for Ramapo as he came to the mound to pitch the final 1.1 innings. He struck out one and walked one, letting up no hits and no runs. He improves to 1-1 on the year. It would be Philip Mahlik who scored the game winner in the top of the 9th as he was driven in by Vincent Timpanelli.
The Scarlet Raiders got on the board in the 1st inning when Ryan Zucker ripped a single to right to lead off, and later came home on a double to left from Connor Clare to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 4th, Ramapo would load the bases as Kyle Buser led off with a single, Liam Duffy followed with a single and Timpanelli reached on an error by the short short. With one out, Vincenzo Sita ripped a single up the middle scoring Buser and Duffy to take a 2- 1 lead.
Rutgers Newark would tie the game in the bottom of the 5th when Clare crossed the plate on a single from John Klimowich after walking with one out to reach first base. In the 9th, Timpanelli would drive home Mahlik after he ripped a single into right field with one out. Westhelle held off the Scarlet Raiders in the bottom half of the inning to take the game, 3-2.
Duffy hit 2-4 with one run scored and Mahlik went 3-5 with one run. Kyle Buser also hit 3-5, scoring one while Timpanelli hit 2-5 with a key RBI. Sita drove in two and hit 1-4. Clare hit 1-4 with one run and one RBI for Rutgers Newark while Ryan Zucker hit 1-5, scoring one.
CJ Growney started the game and pitched seven innings. He let up nine hits and two runs while he walked three and struck out four. Anthony Rosoline started and completed the game for Rutgers Newark. He struck out seven and walked none while letting up 12 hits and three runs, all earned. He takes the loss and falls to 4-3 on the year.
