RAMAPO DEFEATS RUTGERS-CAMDEN 79-74

Camden, NJ: Kashaun Barnes scored 18 of his team high 23 points in the second half as the Ramapo College men's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Camden University 79-74 in a key NJAC road win. The Roadrunners improve to 16-7 overall, 10-6 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raptors now stand at 2-21 overall and 2-14 in the conference.
 
After opening the game on a 12-3 run capped off by a pair of free throws from Ramapo's Jordan Zagadou, the Scarlet Raptors then went on a 15-5 run of their own to tie the game at 17 with 11:16 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets before a three-pointer from Tyrell Russell put Rutgers-Camden up 22-21 with less than ten minutes on the clock. A layup from Bryant Quill and a jumper from Russell kept the lead at one for Rutgers-Camden 24-23 before a free throw from Connor Romano tied the game for the third time 24-24 with 8:34 left in the first half. Quill put Ramapo up 26-24 before a mini 5-2 run put the Scarlet Raptors up 29-28. Quill drained a three-pointer for the Roadrunners to regain the lead for the final time in the first half as Scarlet Raptors would stretch their lead to seven 40-33 with an 11-2 run capped off with a three-pointer from Trai Greer. Ramapo came back to tie the game 40-40. Zagadou converted on a pair of free throws before Barnes sank a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining. Following a missed shot from Rutgers-Camden, Rob McWilliams grabbed the rebound and hit a jumper as time expired to send the two teams into halftime tied at 40.
 
The Roadrunners would open the second half on a 9-2 run, which included seven points from Barnes, capped off with a three-pointer to push the Ramapo lead 49-42. The two teams would trade baskets over the next three minutes before Romano and Barnes would connect on back-to-back three-pointers for a 59-50 lead with 13:21 on the clock. A layup from Jason Battle at 10:13 put Ramapo up 65-59 before mini 6-0 run from Rutgers-Camden tied the game 65-65 for the final time with 5:06 left in the game. McWilliams would grab an offensive rebound for Ramapo and score a jumper that started a 9-2 run that put them up 74-67 with 2:44 on the clock. Goodson scored a basket off a Ramapo turnover before Barnes connected on a layup of his own 76-69 with 1:20 left on the clock. Following a jumper from Goodson, Barnes sank a pair of free throws with ten seconds remaining in the game for a 78-71 lead before Perry hit a three-pointer for Rutgers-Camden with six seconds on the clock 74-78. Barnes would go to the line with three seconds remaining and sink one free throw as Ramapo came away with the 79-74 victory.
 
Barnes led the way with 23 points for the Roadrunners including three three-pointers while he also tallied five rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. McWilliams pulled down a team high 11 rebounds while he also recorded a double double with 13 points. Zagadou and Lewis each posted 12 points in the game while Zagadou finished 4-4 from the free throw line and pulled down eight rebounds. Quill came off the bench and scored nine points while he also pulled down two rebounds and tallied one assist. The team out rebounded the Scarlet Raptors 42-25 while they shot 49.2% (32-65) from the floor, 37.5% (6-16) from the three-point line and 56.3% (9-16) from the free throw line. The Roadrunners forced 15 Rutgers-Camden turnovers and scored 19 points
 
Five players scored in double figures for Rutgers-Camden including Greer with a team high 16 points. McCarthy tallied 15 points including five three-pointers while Russel added 14 points of his own. Goodson added 11 points while Perry tallied ten in the game. The team shot 50.9% (27-53) from the floor, 52% (13-25) from the three-point line and 53.8% (7-13) from the free throw line in the game.
 
The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to NJAC rival William Paterson University on Saturday, February 9th at 3pm.
