Union, NJ: The Kean University men's basketball team defeated Ramapo College 89-83 tonight in NJAC action. The Cougars now stand at 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference while the Roadrunners now move to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the NJAC.
The Roadrunners would take a 45-41 lead into halftime on back-to-back baskets from
Rob McWilliams and
Connor Romano. In the second half
Jordan Zagadou tacked on two points for a six-point lead 47-41 before Mario Gunn went on a mini 4-0 run of his own to cut the lead to two 45-47. The two teams traded baskets before an and-one play from Jeff Cooper shrunk the Ramapo lead to one 50-51 with just under 16 minutes left in the game. McWilliams started a 6-0 run for Ramapo which gave them their biggest lead of the game 57-50 with 14:57 on the clock before a three-pointer from Nate Lyles brought the Cougars within four 53-57. McWilliams sank a basket before a 7-0 run from the Cougars gave them the lead as Jaedan Sheehan sank a three-pointer with 11:04 on the clock 60-59.
Naseer Walker gave Ramapo back the lead 61-60 before back-to-back three-pointers from Cooper put Kean ahead 66-63. The game was tied for the seventh time on a three-pointer from Romano before Jared Latane sank a three-pointer for the Cougars for a 69-66 lead with under eight minutes to play. A 5-2 run from Ramapo, including a three-pointer from Romano tied the game for the eighth time 71-71 before Latane sank a three-pointer to give Kean a 74-71 lead. A 9-6 run from Ramapo tied the game for the final time 80-80 with a pair a free-throws
Marquise Kindel. Lyles made the second of two free throws to put Kean up 81-80 with 2:48 on the clock before Romano sank a three-pointer for a two-point Ramapo lead 83-81 just 20 seconds later. Kean's 8-0 run in the final 1:56 of the game proved to be too much for Ramapo to overcome as the Cougars earned the 89-83 conference victory.
Zagadou led the Roadrunners with a career high 22 points while Romano netted 20 points including six three-pointers. McWilliams posted 18 points and a team high eight rebounds along with a team high eight assists. The team shot 50% (33-65) from the field, 42% (9-21) from the three-point line and 72% (8-11) from the free-throw line.
Kean sank 17 three-pointers in the game as they shot 48% from beyond the three-point line. Cooper led the team with 21 points including 6-12 from the three-point line while Lyles added 16 points and Owens collected 14 points in the game. Jamison tallied seven points and a team high 10 assists. The team shot 48% (31-64) from the field and 76% (10-13) from the free point line.
The Roadrunners return to action when they host Rowan University on Saturday, December 14th at 1pm at the Bradley Center.
