Ewing, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team dropped a tough New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up today to The College of New Jersey, 83-85 on the road. With the loss the Roadrunners fall to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The Lions jump ahead to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC as they move into second place in the conference standings.
Kashaun Barnes led the Roadrunners with a game high 29 points as he hit 10-22 from the field and 8-9 from the charity stripe. Matt Latka collected 19 points, Rob Lewis added 18 and Jason Battle and Rob McWilliams each netted six in the loss. The team combined hitting 30-63 (48%) on the day. Barnes and Lewis each assisted on three plays and Lewis pulled down 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Lewis blocked three shots.
For the Lions, Randy Walk led the way with a double-double that included 20 points and 12 rebounds. P.J. Ringel netted 16 points and Jordan Glover chipped in 15 as the team hit 25-69 (36%) in the win. Ringel dished out five assists and Ryan Jensen and Niall Carpenter each pulled down ten rebounds.
The Lions would jump out to a 10-0 lead to start the game with back-to-back threes from Jensen and Travis Jocelyn, a jumper from Ringel and free throws from Randy Walkjo. The Lions would work to a 19-point advantage with 9:33 on the clock and free throws from Jocelyn, before Bryant Quill nailed down a three-point goal which sparked Ramapo to chip away at their lead, coming within seven with a jumper from Barnes with 2:10 to play in the half. TCNJ would finish on top of Ramapo, 40-30 at the half-time buzzer.
In the second, a three from Walko put TCNJ on top, 46-32 but Ramapo's Lewis sparked a 12-1 run to come within three with a layup from Barnes with 15:11 on the clock. The teams traded baskets over the next five-plus minutes until Barnes nailed down another jumper to tie the game for the first time 58-58 with 9:49 to go. The Lions would continue to cause trouble for Ramapo as they worked to a seven-point lead with under six to play but the Roadrunners did not sit back as they fought to again tie the game 83-83 with two free throws from Barnes. In the final seconds with Ramapo forced to foul, Ringel would nail down two to take the 85-83 lead and a last second shot from Barnes wouldn't fall as the Lions left with the victory over Ramapo.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, January 9th when they travel to NJCU for an 8pm tip on the road.
