Auburndale, FL: The Ramapo College baseball team swept a non-conference double header from Salve Regina University today, 2-1 and 5-4 the RussMatt Invitational. The Roadrunners now stand at 8-4 overall.
Game 1:
Jerry D'Andrea pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, three walks while he scattered six hits. Despite Salve Regina committing four errors in the game the two teams only scored a combined three runs in game one.
Austin Unglaub singled home
Nick Cuba in the bottom of the fouth inning with a hard hit single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Salve Regina tied the game in the top of the seventh before Ramapo put the game winning run on with a leadoff single from
Liam Duffy in the bottom of the seventh. Salve Regina would get out of the jam forcing the game into extra innings. D'Andrea and the Roadrunner defense recorded a 1-2-3 top of the 8th setting up Ramapo for the bottom half of the inning.
Joe Maugeri reached on an error to lead off before Unglaub sacrificed him to second with a sac bunt. Following the second out of the inning,
Vincenzo Sita laced a single up the middle allowing Maugeri to score for the game winning run 2-1.
Game 2:
Pitching and timely hitting from the Roadrunners once again put them in a position to win the game as they came from behind for a 5-4 victory. Salve Regina scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning before Ramapo chipped away with one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to tie the game 3-3.
In the fourth, Sita reached on an error,
Anthony Rocchietti singled down the left field line before
Ryan MacNaughton put down a sac bunt to advance the runners. Sita later scored on an infield error to put Ramapo on the board. In the fifth inning,
Anthony Kuzmenko and Unglaub reached on back-to-back walks before they each moved up on a wild pitch. Sita then ripped a triple down the right field line plating both runs to tie the game 3-3.
The Roadrunners scored the go ahead runs in the top of the seventh. Maugeri led off with a double before moving to third on a wild pitch. Kuzmenko then singled through the left side of the infield before Rocchietti drove a single into right-center field allowing Kuzmenko to score with the eventual game-winning run 5-3. Salve Regina scored one run in the seventh off of Ramapo reliever
Kevin Foulds but he was able to close the game out with a strike out to end the threat.
Kevin Stewart (2-0) struck out four, walked one while he scattered four hits over six innings of work. Foulds worked the seventh inning, striking out one, walking one and surrendering only one hit in his fourth save of the season. Sita and Rocchietti each finished the game 2-4 while Sita drove in two RBI and Rocchietti drove home one RBI.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow morning at 9:45am in their final game of the RussMatt Invitational when they take on Bowdoin College (1-3 overall).
