Salem, VA: The Ramapo College men's basketball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 73-57, in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Final Four in Salem, VA. The Roadrunners finish their epic season with a 25-7 record.
It was a great start for the Roadrunners, as they put together a 9-2 run led by senior captain
Thomas Bonacum, who made two threes. However, the Titans came back with a 7-0 run themselves led by Adam Fravert to tie the game at nine.
Both teams went back and forth with
Patrick Peterson getting five quick points in two-and-a-half minutes. The Titans began to pull away at the end of the first half, though, as they went on a 5-0 run to take a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
Peterson led the Roadrunners after the first half with seven points, while Bonacum had six and
Josh Ford had five. Charlie Noone and Adam Fravert both had eight points for UW-Oshkosh.
The second half began with a Ford three-pointer that fell to quickly cut the lead to four. But Ben Boots came right back with a three of his own. The Titans would hold the lead around five and six throughout the half as the Roadrunners continued to fight back.
At 12:11,
Jordan Zagadou made it a six-point game with a crafty layup, and would come back on the next possession and drop another one in. The Titans continued to hit their shots, though, as Brett Wittchow hit a three at 8:51 to push the lead to nine.
Wittchow would hit another at 3:20 to give UW-Oshkosh their first double-digit lead of the night at 66-54. He would hit another on the next possession to further the lead.
The Titans would eventually get their lead up to 73-54 with less than two minutes to play, and that would seal the deal against the Roadrunners.
Ramapo would honor their five senior players in Bonacum, Ford,
Christopher Moseley,
Nick Stanek, and
James Long by subbing them out with less than a minute to play. Bonacum would finish with 11 points and two rebounds, while Ford had ten points, three rebounds, and three assists. Moseley led the team with seven rebounds and netted seven points as well.
Peterson was a co-leader in points with 11, while
Rob McWilliams and
Rob Lewis had five points apiece.
Despite the loss, it was only the second time in school history that the Roadrunners have made the Final Four (1991).
They finish their season with many highlights including back-to-back New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships, a 66-62 upset against the No. 1 team in the NCAA DIII Tournament in Williams College on their court, and two more tournament wins in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds in the Bradley Center.
Thank you to the team for bringing the Ramapo College community together all season long, and thank you to the Rowdies for making this a truly amazing season.
