Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team defeated the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action tonight at the Bradley Center 86-74. The Roadrunners improve to 8-2 overall, 4-2 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 1-10 overall, 1-5 in the conference.
Five Roadrunners scored in double figures led by
Rob Lewis with 29 points and 14 rebounds his fifth double-double of the season.
Connor Romano followed with 16 points and six rebounds.
Jason Battle collected 15 points and dished out six assists.
Kashaun Barnes had 14 points and dished out two assists. While
Rob McWilliams had ten points and six rebounds of his own. The Roadrunners shot 28-63 (44%) from the floor and 21-28 (75%) from the free throw line. The Scarlet Raptors shot 24-57 (42%) from the floor and 12-14 (85%) from the free throw line. Ian McCarthy led Rutgers-Camden with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
The Roadrunners opened up the game with a 6-0 lead when Lewis made both free throws followed by a layup and jumper from Barnes. Rutgers-Camden closed the gap to three off a shot by Trai Greer but the Roadrunners would again extend the lead to six with a three pointer from Battle 9-3. A 13-5 run would put the Scarlet Raptors up 16-14 before Barnes snapped the run by sinking a three-point shot 17-16 with just over ten minutes left to play in the first half. The two teams would trade baskets over the next four minutes of play. With 4:26 on the clock the Roadrunners would go up by two with a layup from Lewis followed by one from Barnes extending the lead to four 30-26. The Roadrunners went on a mini 5-0 run to take an eight-point lead with just under two minutes left to play 38-30. The Scarlet Raptors and the Roadrunners would trade baskets in the final minute in the half with Ramapo heading into the locker room up 41-33. For Rutgers-Camden, McCarthy led the team with 12 points and six rebounds while Robbie Brosh collected four assists in the half. Lewis led Ramapo for the half with 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
In the second half, Scarlet Raptor Kyle Goodson Jr. would close the gap to six with a layup 40-46. Greer would later make a layup with just over 13 minutes left to play 49-53 forcing the Roadrunners to call time out. After the timeout McWilliams went to the basket extending the Roadrunner lead to six. With 9:49 on the clock McCarthy sank a three-point shot cutting the Roadrunner lead to two 55-57. Romano answered back with a three-point shot of his own 60-55 starting a 11-2 run for the Roadrunners 68-57. The run was snapped when
Andre Morgan fouled Greer who made both free throws closing the gap to nine 59-68. Lewis would then extend the Roadrunner lead to 14 with a layup followed by two free throws 76-62. McCarthy would answer back with a three-pointer but not before Romano sank another one for Ramapo 79-65 with just under three minutes left in the game. McCarthy collected three more points with just over one-minute left on the clock 71-82. The Roadrunners finished the half with a layup from Battle, 86-74. McCarthy and Harris both led the Scarlet Raptors in the second half with nine points each while McCarthy and Greer dished out four assists each. Romano led the Roadrunners in the second half with 15 points and three rebounds while McWilliams had ten points and three rebounds. Lewis collected seven rebounds in the half.
The Roadrunners return to action Saturday, December 15 as they head to Farmingdale State College for a 2pm match-up.
