Montclair, NJ: The Montclair State University men's basketball team defeated Ramapo College 95-75 tonight in NJAC action. The Red Hawks now stand at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC. The Roadrunners see their five-game win streak snapped and stand at 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Red Hawks used an offensive attack that included 13 three-pointers as Akbar Hoffman recorded a season high six in the game and finished with a team high 25 points. Four other Red Hawks scored in double figures. Eddie Emedoh posted 14 points while Irving Callendar added 12 points and Justin Porter and Joseph Radi each contributed with ten points. Both Jordan Roberson and Porter led the team with nine rebounds each. The Red Hawks shot 49% (32-65) from the field, 46% (13-26) from the three-point line and 66% (18-27) from the free throw line.
With the game tied 6-6 with 16 minutes on the clock in the first half the Roadrunners would go on a mini 6-0 run capped off with a jumper from
Rob Lewis to go up 12-6. A 7-0 run from MSU put them up 13-12 before the two teams traded baskets as Ramapo led 16-15 on a basket from
Andre Morgan with 10:22 left to play. An 8-2 run from MSU saw them take a 23-18 lead with a three-pointer from Rosbia before they outscored Ramapo in the final seven minutes of the half 17-8. MSU pulled away for a 14-point lead 40-26 as Hoffman sank a three-pointer off an assist from Jalen Parham.
MSU held a double-digit lead the entire second half while the Roadrunners shrunk the Red Hawk lead to 12 with a jumper from
Rob McWilliams with 17:17 on the clock 47-34. The Red Hawks took their biggest lead of the game with less than nine minutes left to play when Jordan Roberson scored a basket for a 77-49 score. A mini 7-0 run by the Roadrunners started by
Kashaun Barnes with a jumper and capped off with a three-pointer from
Connor Romano closed the gap 77-56 with 7:28 on the clock. The Red Hawks sank eight of their game-high 13 three-pointers in the second half as they came away with the 95-75 NJAC victory.
The Roadrunners were led by Lewis who scored 14 points while Barnes added 12 points, five assists and two steals. Morgan contributed with nine points and Romano added eight of his own in the game. The Roadrunners shot 49% (30-61) from the floor, 28% (2-7) from the three-point line and 61% (13-21) from the free throw line. The Roadrunner defense forced 21 MSU turnovers which led to 29 points in the game for Ramapo.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, December 1st when they host Stockton University (3-1, 2-0 NJAC) at 1pm.
